I've never tried this, but am curious if anybody else around here has?  Seems to be becomming more popular nowadays.

I've never done it-I'd be too scared of getting in trouble! but I always shop near closing time and get amazing bargains then. The amount of perfectly good fresh food that is wasted because of sell by dates is disgusting.

That's my problem too. Fear of being caught. Technically the stuff still belong to the supermarket, so it can be seen as stealing.

Our A worked for M&S many years ago...and he says waste (out of date) food was,

* Offered at a reduced for staff (never for customers)
* The rest was given to a childrens home
* Anything else (usually lunch/chilled food) was put in the bin, after being punctured and covered in blue dye?!

Must be different now...or some sane soul is bypassing the dye.   hadn't thought about the stealing side...and it still being 'owned' even after it's no longer wanted.

Let us know what you find if you go a foody waste forage Celest....and to neeps.

Read Tristram Stuart's "Waste" - I'm sure I wrote about it here before - and you'll learn what all those companies get up to! Some are improving, though.
