I hate it when advertisers talk about "product" - yuck.
Can't stand "I would OF"
Of course I'm perfect! But I love using "ridiclious" instead of ridiculous - just sounds nicer.

There is a school of thought that US English is actually more correct than UK English, as the (English) founding fathers took the language as used at the time, which had many variable spellings - even Shakespeare spelled his name in different ways - and therefore etymologically speaking US English is "purer" than ours. I heard someting similar said by Terry Jones on a series he did a while back. I have to agree, being a big fan of Middle English. If you read Chaucer, you would see how much nearer to the original language some of their spelling and pronunciation actually is. It doesn't excuse their inventing new tenses and such, but there is truth in it.
Do we have such a pure language anyway? It is constantly evolving, is a hybrid of every race that ever conquered the Island of Britain (and a few we colonised) and all these hated expressions, like it or no, will find their way into our dictionaries eventually.
We still have the most versatile language in the world and the most widely spoken and used as a second language.

well, turning the thread around, heres a modern saying I do like
'low hanging fruit'
Its quite often used in technical terms regarding improvements ie to increase the performance of a database then concentrate on the low hanging fruit ie the improvements that will make the biggest difference but are relatively easy to implement!
no doubt someone will now point out its not a modern saying but dates back a long way ie when people used to pick apples ... but I like the new context

Eeeek 'lol' - really starting to dislike this. Was talking to my nephew on webcam and he kept using lol...but had a straight face. I jibed him until he actually started laughing and had something to lol about. Carrot Lover tells me that some of her friends actually say 'lol'....yikes...what has the language come to?
Language....sorry....aint no keeping it the same. They've tried for a long time in france to have a 'pure' language, but unless a language is cut off from different types of language users....change will come...like it or not. Most of the time i like it...a change is as good as a rest
Talking saying....love most of them. Wonderful when you can encapsulate so much imagery and experience in a few words. Think it has something to do with the longevity of our proverbs.
