ROYAL MAIL SET TO HIKE STAMP PRICES...AGAIN
| Quote: | The price of a first-class stamp could rise by 3p next year under a plan to help rescue the Royal Mail's finances.
Bosses are also planning to increase the cost of a second-class stamp by up to 2p, under the measures to raise around £100 million of extra revenue.
The inflation-busting proposals have been sanctioned by industry regulator Postcomm in order to help safeguard Royal Mail's universal service - delivery to every property in the country for the price of a stamp. First-class and second-class stamps currently cost 39p and 30p respectively.
In its proposal document, Postcomm said a potential 10 per cent fall in mail volumes would still see Royal Mail lose cash next year despite the proposed price hikes, which are planned to take affect from April.
The regulator said: "Royal Mail Letters' finances are weak and deteriorating.
Royal Mail wrote to Postcomm on September 8 asking for the licence changes to be made "in light of the current market situation facing the company".
The service is proposing two specific alterations: getting rid of a capping regime for prices, and enabling it to avoid lowering some prices in line with current negative inflation.
Customer body Consumer Focus described the price hikes as a "low blow".
Chief executive Ed Mayo told the Daily Mail: "This is paying for failure. The only reason to hike up the price of a stamp is because Royal Mail has failed to modernise as a business." |
