Should anyone info on composting this weekend, we will have volunteers at two venues.
We will be at The Happy Plant Garden Centre, Mintlaw from 11.00am to 3.00pm and at
Kirkton Garden Centre, Stonehaven, from 11.00am to 3.00pm.
Pick up information on where to get discounted compost bins, info on what you can or can't put in to make the best compost.
Also info on how to get a hold of a green cone food digester, or better still a green johanna (which will take cooked and uncooked food, as well as garden waste).
All the best

Hi Erica,
A Green Johanna is a product Green Cone purchased, and is genuine hot composter. You put 2 parts kitchen waste to 1 part garden waste. You can put cooked food, including meat products in. It has a circular sealable lid, which can be adjusted to let more air in, and has a base, with holes to allow leachate out and worms in.
Unlike the green cone, the green johanna produces a compost, rather than the "juice" that the green cone does.
Green johanna's are at moment - expensive, but if local authorities were to get behind them, they could discount them, as they did with cones.
To see one go to green cone home page.

Thanks - I don't think we produce enough food waste to justify but our green cone doesn't work well as the drainage here is poor. Still looking for somewhere to stick the odd bit of fish skin & bones and occasional dog poo, otherwise our mainly vegetarian and eat it all up diet produces very little waste which goes in normal compost.
We are also trying out the Composphere composting tumbler from Natural Collection catalogue for faster hotter compost. _________________ Erica Hollis BSc MNIMH

yes it is. Only downside is it is quite hard to empty fully but then I guess a little left in helps the next batch get going. _________________ Erica Hollis BSc MNIMH
