They usually get woodier and coarser as they get older. Best to pull them while they are still young and tender.
What I did was pull up every other one while they were still small and then pulled the others as they got a bit bigger. _________________ Sassinak

It could be down to the variety you're growing. Early varieties often get woody if they're left to mature as they're breed to be picked when young.
It could also be down to moisture - if your plants have dried at any time during their growth, that could have caused it.
Hope that helps, and don't give up - try an few different varieties next year so you have a comparison. _________________ Tumuli Design

Ditto Sass and D.....don't give up. Only other thing i could suggest is too much muck (manure) in your soil...they like it quite sandy. This usually makes them fork more i'm told rather than become woody.
Bet you could still make a fine soup with them. _________________ Better late than never! |

When did you plant them? Is it possible that because of the weather fluctuations the plants think they're in their second year and are about to go to seed? Onions behave like that on a regular basis so maybe other plants do as well? _________________ It is better to light a candle than to rail against the darkness

| my early planted carrots were woody (i presume)because of the dry spell we had a few of months ago. my later carrots are ok. |

Hello.
the longer you leave your carrots in the ground the woodier they will get. this can happen to alot of veg, beetroot etc etc.
I also always cover my carrots with fleece. it keeps out the dreaded carrot root fly who have 2 breeding times in a season. little devils _________________ Aberdeenshire Rosie |

What do you suggest is the best way to store them once you take them up? _________________ Gin'll fix it |

Hi Ali. If you have a nice dark cool place and some wooden crates, they can be stored in layers in either damp sand or compost.
You can get these things off ideal world shopping chanel called 'Fresh Pods'. they are wee things you can put in the fridge or with any fruit or veg you are storing and they soak up the ethylene gas that comes off the produce and stops them going off. They really do work, i have them in my fridge!! _________________ Aberdeenshire Rosie |

I pulled up my second row of carrots this weekend and they are fine I planted them about 2 weeks after my first row I think it must have something to do with the weather at the time who knows. _________________ we did not weave the web of life.
