I've been offered a 14 week young cockeral, he's a maran. I'm not supposed to get cockerels, due to noise for neighbours. My youngest was scared of the noise originally but unless en masse doesn't seem to differentiate between hens now.
Right now he's just found his call, doesn't crow in the hen house at all and only about four times a day and once each time. He's very good natured.
Some of my hens announce eggs and also do their town cryer bit for several minutes at atime, when they fancy.
HONESTLY, will he eventual crow loads at all times and could he wake my neighbours? We have near by dogs that bark, a field of cows at the back and a recycling centre that can get noisy in the day time. (Not to mention the skip/removals.

If you can make the henhouse virtually lightproof at night, and you say he doesn't crow inside it, then that should be all right. I'd say if he is quiet between 8pm and 8am then that is reasonable. It's the country, good heavens - what should people expect?! _________________ Local food - better by far! |

Ohhh this sounds good! I can check but I think it's very dark in there, the hens can't see to sort their perch position after about 8.45 at the moment and I've not seen much light when putting up perch on occasion at bed time. I'll g and check tonight
I agree about the day time. I think I need to chat to the neighbours.

Hubby has talked me out of taking him, 'let's not even risk upsetting our neighbours,' (who are lovely) and deep down i know he's right.
Therefore, on behalf of this lady, would anybody be interested in a 14 week (she hatched him from egg bought) very friendly maran cockerel, I think he's a cuckoo maran but I will check. Also on offer if required, his friend a buff orpington hen, who was laying but currently moulting.
Thanks

Ours have always crowed as soon as it gets light, both in and outside the hen house.........mind you, there's lots of head room in there.
It's in the summer when it barely goes dark they are the most nuisance. They crow from about two in the morning, repeatedly.
Bear in mind, that's when people are too hot at night so they want their windows open. Given where you are, I think you're right not to get him, it's too close to all the other houses. _________________ It is better to light a candle than to rail against the darkness

| Mine start crowing at 4am often even in the winter, and thats on Shetland, noisy creatures that they are, so I think you were right to turn him down too. |

I know, deep down I know but saw him briefly this morning and he's so beautiful! Not a cuckoo I don't think, black tail, white body and black spots. I need to put him on the emporium.
