Didn't know which title to put this thread in - so hope this is an okay spot - I will see by the response I guess.

I have signe dup to freecycle to help me track down unloved green cones and also the KOMP compost bins (the ones with rods and panels).

As I talk to people at events, I get asked by people already composting, if I have a stock of spare parts for the KOMP style bins, as the lids especially can fly up, and break the rods that hold them in place.

The other thing is people who for one reason or another give up on their green cones.

This made me think, that perhaps I should see if members of NEEPS had spares for the compost bins, so that I could perhaps collect them centrally, to be redistributed. The same with unloved green cones.

Actually, we're looking for a new lid for our Green Cone as the existing one has got broken by an over-enthusiastic gardener with a mini-digger.

Tips on getting the Green Cone to compost quicker in Aberdeenshire's cold climate would also be welcome...

Green cones can be a bit of mystery - they seem to work a treat in some parts of Aberdeenshire, and not in others. This may be to do with good draining soil. Location - when close to a wall, where the heat can bounce back to help. Being in a sunny spot does seem to be an essential element.

Never let the waste go above the basket level or the process will stop altogether.

Unlike the composting process, when it has problems, you can usually solve them easily, when the green cone has problems - unless it is issues like flies, there are so many variables which can be specific to the area you are in.

Not much help I guess - but if I get any spares for the green cones will let you know.

i have a green cone composter free to good home. i found it a waste of time so i dug it up and its sitting in a shed if you want it. i prefer to use an old fashioned compost heap and always hungry cats lol...

Wormeries ar ecovered briefly in our Master Composter training. If Sheila is able to help with the training, she has a wormery, so would be able to answer any questions you have. Otherwise it is only basic knowledge I have.
