FREE HOME FIRE SAFETY VISITS
In Scotland, people's homes and possessions are destroyed by fire more often than you think. In fact there is a house fire every hour of every day.
Your home could have possible fire risks that you might not even be aware of. The good thing is that by recognising the dangers and taking a few simple preventative steps, you can easily reduce your risk of a serious house fire.
If you'd like someone from Grampian fire and Rescue Service to visit you, answer your questions and show you how to make your home safer, click the link and request a visit.

the best safety feature we have is the mains powered smoke alarm, you cant get annoyed with it and take out the batteries....(or borrow them when you run out of batteries for other gizmos....and forget to replace them)....
and having a very small house which is only 1 1/2 storey, so you can get out easily!! _________________ Happiness is a Haflinger! |

Shirley, you're just wanting 2 strapping firemen knocking at your door, aren't you.
Joking aside this is a very good service that is supplied free of charge, (okay you need to provide a cuppa and a biscuit or two).
When I visit I'm shocked at times to find batteries taken out or rusted into place, these things are meant to save peoples lives.
Do you ever think that you and your family may be injured or worse because you want the battery for something more trivial.
GF&RS will fit a smoke alarm or two, depending on what you need.
All alarms have a 10 year battery and if you or any member of the household are hard of hearing there are alarms that are designed especially for this.
A brilliant service supplied that not many people know about. _________________ Give what you can please, I am.

Hiya,
I found out about these checks through the kids playgroup at the annual visit to the Fire Station and politely declined. I've a pretty good idea of what's wrong with my home which is more or less everthing. One of which is being an old house (the history of wiring can be seen from almost the first ever cables to modern stuff) we have very few sockets in each room (eg the lounge has 1 single socket and 1 double socket) and they are all in the wrong place so we use a lot of extensions - a big no no as far as fire safety is concerned. We try and minimise the risk by making sure that each socket from which an extension originates is not over loaded by limiting the total wattage we have plugged into the extension. We've also changed the fuses in the plug of each appilance to one more suitable (mainly to 5 amps or less). Not ideal but it's not our house so we're not going to spend much money on it. Our other main risk is over crowding with stuff and people.
However we're going to be putting in a mains system in our renovation project for the increased level of safety that it provides and secondly cause the building warrant people probably insist on it. However I have reservations as the battery alarm (supposedly of a type immune to cooking vapour) which is in the hall next to the kitchen in our current accomadation drives me batty. The OH says it actually a dinner ready alarm. I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has as I'm forever bashing it with a broom handle to silence it. I can imagine that our style of cooking triggering the alarm system throughout the whole of the 'new' house...grrrrrr..... Still it's better to be batty than dead. I suppose I could make sure the reset button was very handy.
Yours
