by the way wouldn't even consider a 20ltr one....that would be nearly half my height for start!

You must be particularly short then... I've a 20l jerry can, and while it can be a bit on the heavy side when completely full... I wouldn't say it's particularly tall

Although, I also have a sneaking suspicion that you are only allowed to carry 10l in a container at any one time in a car? Saying that no-ones ever said anything whenever I've filled it up.

We've both types... got two small plastic 5l ones and the 20l metal one. Metal one is obviously more sturdy, but both the plastic ones, have in the past, been stuck accidentally on the worktop in the garage, which has a south facing window and it was during the height of summer (ie very sunny... not the usual wet summer ) and neither of them exploded, so TBH, I doubt you will have an issue regardless of which you go for.

I do recall seeing some 10l (I think) metal jerry cans though, which might be a nice in between size.

I would put some thought into how you are carrying/stowing them though. Ideally you want to be able to put it in the boot and strap it down to avoid it moving about the place, 'cos 10 or 20l of fuel is heavy enough to mangle other stuff in your boot if it's able to shift about too much.

Metal every time. Just be careful opening them after they've been left a while as they seal shut, rather than vent. This does mean you don't lose half the contents through evapouration, nor do you have them bulging out like plastic ones do. Their shape makes them much easier to store and stack as well, if you really needed to do so.
