Any bright ideas how to get oil off clothing?

Got some on my jeans this evening, so more specifically, how to get oil off cotton.

One idea would be to treat  the jeans all over, and to consider it more or less water proofed... AH well, maybe not such a good idea. I usually just pre-soak it in soapy water, so that the oil doesn't come off when mixed with other clothes in the washing machine. Or treat it with washing up liquid first if the stain is too bad.

one way is to rub washing up liquid into the spot before putting in the machine....the soap will break down most of the oil

good luck

Thanks for the replies - will try the washing up liquid.

It's engine oil (that's why I put it in the garage section, but I should have been specific).
