Well, if any of you had thought of going on a shopping trip for local products in Inverbervie - forget it. This must be the worst town in the NE for local shopping... I'm rather disappointed. You'd think that shopping would be easier for me now, living in a small town rather than miles from the nearest village - but no. Both New Deer and Auchenblae were a lot better.

Bervie has a Coop, a giftshop/post office, a butcher, a baker, a newsagent, a pharmacy, a clothes shop with stuff that looks like leftover from the 50s or 60s. Not one of them manages to sell local strawberries or eggs. The butcher has eggs, even duck, but not free range. I think the nearest farm shop is about 10 miles away - so not exactly local! The Coop is also one of the worst kind - no Scottish butter; no white cheddar; the other day they didn't even have a simple pack of digestives... And organics - if you are lucky, you get organic milk and yoghurt. They are often out of milk.

Maybe here's a job opportunity for me - open a local food shop?! Ah yes. That needs some capital, doesn't it.

I knew something was wrong.

Sounds to me like Inverbervie is ripe for a transition initiative?!

Then again, EVERYWHERE needs to get transitioning ... after a week at the TT conference I've come away both inspired and worried. One workshop involved filling out a questionnaire from Chris Mortensen's "Crash Course", which made me realise how utterly vulnerable we are in this modern world of globalisation and just-in-time "convenience".

I'll dig out the Crash Course web link and post it on the permaculture and transition site ... haven't watched the videos yet, but from what I've heard they're essential viewing to help us understand the current economic crash, and what we should prepare for as it deepens. Eeek!

There’s a theory that people need to hear or see something three times before it starts to register, so well worth popping something in the local paper now to start sowing the seeds, even if you’re not sure if you’ll be around there that long. It could include the NEEPS website perhaps? And TransitionNetwork website? And Transition Scotland contact – Eva Schonfeld – for anyone who’d like to get on the transition email list. I bet there are people quietly concerned about what’s going on, but not sure what they can do …
