Well.. you only need to look out of your window to see that the weather is awful today... lots of rain through the night too!

Looking out of my window I see the Don is VERY full.. and is indeed on Floodwatch according to the Floodwatch site... as are many of the other rivers in Scotland. http://www.sepa.org.uk/flooding/warnings/index.aspx

The Met Office has issued the following weather warning for our area.
Quote:

Heavy Rain
Affecting Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire & Moray
Persistent rain, heavy at times will continue during the rest of the night and on Thursday morning. Rainfall totals of 25mm are expected in most areas and locally 40mm, especially over the high ground of Aberdeenshire, Moray and Northeast Highland Region. The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the latest Scottish Environment Protection Agency 'Live Flood Warning Information', and refer to 'Traffic Scotland' for further advice on road conditions.

Issued by Met Office.
Valid from: Thursday 26 October, 2006 at 02:10
Expires on: Thursday 26 October, 2006 at 12:00

UK EARLY WARNINGS OF SEVERE WEATHER
These warnings are issued to help the public make informed decisions that protect their life, welfare and property in the event of severe weather over the next few days. They are issued when fixed weather thresholds are met.

Heavy Rain
Expected from 01:00 Thu 26 Oct to 09:00 Fri 27 Oct

The risk of disruption in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire & Moray is 70%

Well was meant to pick up DS from Inverness today, but my Dad only got a couple of miles out of the village and had to turn back due to thw water on the road. We're going to try again tomorrow.

Better safe than sorry!!

David has gone out to Inverurie to finish off the compost bins at Pauline's... I stayed at home as it's just horrible out there... I see the warning has now got gale force winds added to it...

Hold on to your roofs! It's the same here. Want to go to Lidl's tonight to pick up some birdfeeders ( on special from today) - let's hope my car won't take off into the storm. I think I need to employ the feedbag weighdown method again
(Several bags of feed in the boot keep the car on the road!)

At least the rain has eased here and the river level is beginning to fall again.

Our tap water is murky brown... is it safe to drink??

We get that sometimes when there has been heavy rainfall. We installed a filter in the water pipe and we have to rinse the grit and muck out of it more often when the weather is like this. It is probably ok to drink if you don't mind a little dirt

Thanks Julie

We've got a filter fitted already... it will all have been past the uv light... but must be too fine to be trapped by the prefiltery thing.. (I'm not using the technical name because I don't know it LOL) - it's clean dirt I suppose.

Shirley, check Lidl.co.uk for the feeders. I've not seen anything about bushes - sure it was Lidl's and not Aldi? Must have a look...

(No, I really don't want any new plants!!!!!!!!! )

Wish you'd said earlier, I was in there this morning + could have saved you a trip

No fruit bushes on offer at the moment (usually spring). Will let you know if I see any as I'm after some too

There is no mention of fruit bushes on Lidl's web site but the leaflet I have says fruit bushes (it shows blackberry, blackcurrent, gooseberry and raspberry) 99p each and trees (apple, pear, plum, cherry) £3.99 each and it sayd available Sat 28th October
Garden shrubs 99p and roses 1.49

I shall go and look because I have the space and clear ground to get them into at the moment

In a way I quite like the wind... and I don't mind the cold.. but we've got scaffolding up around the chimney at the moment and it's making a hugeeeeee noise!!! I prefer wind in the daylight so I can see what's going on... let's hope they drop by bedtime, or it will be a sleepless night! Rattle rattle rattle lol

As I spent most of today in the big freezer (-18 degree C), and will do so again tomorrow, it's positively warm outside in comparison! Mind you, less wind in the freezer

Right, Sassinak, I take your word for it - another trip to Lidl's on Saturday then. At that price even I would find a place for another tree or two... Actually, I'm looking for some particular varieties, and as I haven't been able to find them anywhere, luck might have it that Lidl's sell them! Funny, though - I try not to take their leaflet, to save on paper - but if they don't have all their offers on the web, that's not much good! Another reason might be that they don't keep all their specials at all branches - which one do you go to?

I spent a couple of days last week putting new tarpaulin covers on sixteen outside poultry pens. I do hope they will all still be there in the morning.

I washed quite a lot of plant pots today - about 40 - and left them in the trailer. I am not going outside now to put them in a shed. The trailer is up against an outbuilding so hopefully they won't take off.

The wind is horrendous with a fine drizzle - I wonder what we will all find in the morning!!

HELLS BELLS...............I was terrified last night.
I was alone in the house, listening to the roof creaking and the tiles chattering, wondering what kind of damage was going on outside when the power went down.
With no TV noise and only candle light and a hurricane lamp, it sounded so much worse.
Normally, Gordon connects the generator so we have water and the freezers don't defrost, but I don't have him at the moment.
I phoned him and made him talk to me for about two hours to make me feel less alone. That has to be hell for most blokes, especially when there's something they want to see on the TV.

Luckily, when I checked this morning, there was no real damage done outside. The only casualty was a bit of felt on the chicken house nest box and a couple of things blown over.
How did you lot fare?

Oh it was horrible,my OH works nights so im here looking after the place while hes not here, the potting shed that is joined to our bedroom was taking a beating and part of the roof came away,i wouldnt care normaly but our kune piglets are in there at the mo,the temp hut we made for the mini pigs blew away in the night, and we now have a leaky roof in the sunlounge which is what our kids are sleeping in,not to mention all the rain we have had over the last few weeks has completly flooded the pigs out ,so i have had enough of the weather at the mo.

Never mind i just hope we get some nice days soon, can do with the land drying out a bit at mo.is every thing ok your end?

Hi all, we had a power cut from 8.15pm until about 10pm, when i got up this morning i had the task of collecting the tops of the hen huts from the field thankfully no hens in those 2 sheds the gate in the duck run is hanging on one hinge now, also the food station for the hens was upturned too.
It was the day before when we had water in the garage so at 6.30am on wednesday i was sweeping or at least trying to sweep the rain water out from the garage (i have my freezers in there which are both full of food).the garden had 3" of water in it (the ducks loved it) in the yard was about 4 inch, but thankfully no damage done (this time)

Lost the felt from one of the chicken houses, small part of a fence down, bucket blown over and moved about 50yards (it was empty as the bucket man had been yesterday morning), incinerator blown over as well as a few other things - but could have been a lot worse. Had the candles and generator all ready - filled 2 flasks with hot water and put batteries in the radio but the power did not go off. This is unusual as it is usually the first thing to go when there is a gale. Probably because I had everything ready.

What a night!!!

Not too much damage here though. A couple of gates off, a shed roof that wasn't attached was blown over and damaged a door and some branches down...one almost hit my new shed!!

wow... we were lucky here too... although I wonder whether the chimney might have come down if David hadn't already taken it down!! All the brickwork was loose and the pot itself was just about balancing... !!

We had a couple of small powercuts... then I lit the candles just in case and we didn't have any more! A friend from Insch who posts on selfsufficientish was without electricity for 20 hours though!!

Much better today though eh?? Turned pretty cold towards the end of the day though. We were out at Costco with Pauline and then to B A Countrystores - we all got a fab pair of gloves each... shooting gloves... basically fingerless gloves with a mitten bit that folds out of the way when not required... We went to Wark Farm on the way back and picked up some meat.

My mum and my daughter were going to be coming up to visit for the weekend, but I got a call from them this morning to say that they'd missed the train and that daughter wasn't feeling too good.. (I'm sure it was the weather reports on the telly that have put them off!!!!!) - shame.. I was looking forward to seeing them too.

You just reminded me - I meant to go and collect the last of the apples that would have blown off in the storm.
I just about have enough room to squeeze a few more stewed apples into the veg freezer, then we have to start eating like fury ready for next season

The apples that blew off fed our geese... they LOVE them and they just happen to be in their bit of field at the moment. They chase each other about for them.. it's very amusing to watch.

Apple fed geese .......Are they going to taste as good as apple fed pork, or are they not for eating?

And why not!
They can all have bald patches on the backs of their heads, just like our chickens.

There is a severe weather warning in place from both met check and met office gales and heavy rain spreading from the west with gusts up too 80 mile an hour.
Hope everyone will be ok, i'm just worried about the rabbits due to their cover flapping about a wee bittie, but hey my middle name is PANIC

Its started raining really heavily down here in fife and although we are sheltered a bit by the woods at the side of the house the wind is bloowing a hooligan through the tree tops..

Hope your wee bunnies are ok

It's wet and wild out there here too. Blowing a hoolie and the rain is coming sideways. Thank goodness all the animals are tucked up safe and warm.

Hiya TS i've just had to go out and screw a plank of wood across the doors of the hutch to keep the plastic sheet on, both rabbits are in their box so they must be frightened.
The huts for the hens and ducks have just had flag stone plonked on top of their huts to keep the roof on (bad idea having the roof come off instead of a big door to get in and clean.........more work for me to do methinks next week....... have big door and a fixed roof)
Oh and i landed on my ass twice coming from the workshop to the hutch...............VERY WINDY

I've got up this morning to find the children's slide in a different place in the garden, a big green plastic box (you know those big garden storage boxes?) moved up the path, the kiddies picnic table in another part of the garden, and various small items redistributed.

I was awake till about 3am this morning, and at about 2am I realised that Himself and the two older kids had left their shoes on the front step because they were muddy. I came downstairs to a still quiet, and found that although the rain had been lashing down, it was all coming from the south and west. The house is north facing and the shoes were dry as a bone - although I think it was the wind that dried them after the rain stopped.

Lucky with the shoes there PD - it was fairly wild for a time here but look at it this morning. Beautiful autumnal sunshine and bright skies. A wee bit cold but that's fine for the time of year methinks.
