I was just listening to an article about a bloke who put a green roof on his garden shed.

Basically, he strengthed the roof and uprights on his normal 6ftx6ft garden shed and then put a rim around the top to make a shallow box.  He then used pond liner to make it water proof.  He then filled the top with gravel and soil and planted alpines.

It sounds nice, although I think it'd dry out in the summer and flood in the winter.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of this.

The first green roofs I saw was about 30 years ago, on a Steiner school in Germany. They are supposed to be very good insulation! You need to make sure they are well drained, to avoid the flooding problem, and choose plants that can cope with the dry, shallow soil.

Hence why alpines are mostly used. House leeks work well too.

now that I think of it, I'm sure the RSPB head quarters have a grass roof.  I think a couple of other bird reserves also had grass roofs.

they have done it on gardener world prog on a wee seed  to show 'anyone can do it'.
They used mostly light and well drainage 'soil' and mostly small mediterian plants and alpines

I'm not sure that its a house, I think its the aquarium/sea live centre under the bridge.

I could be wrong though.
