I was really shocked too ...I would have thought that anyone who works as hard as Stoney and as low impact on the environment he lives in by growing all his own stuff etc would be supported 100% - after all those around him benefit from it. :?

You wouldn't believe some of the flack that bloke gets. I think folk feel threatened by him because he is so unswerving in his intentions and how he lives his life, and I think he expects other people to be equally as stalwart. I fear he is often disappointed in humanity, though, as am I.

People tend to think "that way of life is okay for you, but [excuse, excuse]" because they don't want to see there is an alternative. We see his life as an example to strive for, others see it as a criticism of their way of doing things.

What's a scooby? A van? Speaking as a van driver, I think it unlikely that someone would risk damaging their van out of malice and can only assume it's perhaps someone used to driving a small car who doesn't realise the clearance you have to allow - no excuse of course. I also was astonished at the horrible comments. I can't believe someone would be so wilfully nasty in response to a bad incident in someone's life.

Off with their heads, I say

:whdat:

Scooby is a Subaru (generally an Impreza but applies to them all).

Some van drivers just don't care 'cos it's not their van, doesn't apply to all of them, but I've seen a couple who really couldn't have cared (possibly thought that the battle scars were cool or something).

I'm quite surprised by the views on him being new to the area, etc. I know that sometimes English people get it (sometimes in fun and sometimes not) but didn't think that people could be so abusive and "closed" as that.

Yes, village mum's comments were downright rude. Makes you wonder how people like that were brought up - certainly with no manners or consideration for folk's feelings.

I didn't know what a scooby was either. :?

PD ~> good points.

We were talking to a couple of people not long ago and the subject of global warming came up. The man had read an article in the Wall Street Journal and a book on the subject, both items said global warming was going to be good for the world.

He said he'd read that grapes were now being grown in Canada and wine produced and that the sea wouldn't rise by more that 3 inches globally and all sorts of other stuff. Basically he thought all the changes which have happened and those which will happen would be good ones. DH and I just sat there saying nothing. It seemed easier not to contradict him, but perhaps had I been more courageous like Stoney the outcome of the conversation would have been quite different!

Definitely... I've never really understood "keyboard warriors" though, almost all of them, if confronted in real life, would never say half as much as they do behind the "internet", despite the fact that in a lot of cases, if you wanted to, you could probably trace them down.

Exactly! Bet she wouldn't say it to Stoney's face, which makes it the ultimate act of cowardice.

Thanks Cassipod for turning up at Stoney's and getting stuck in, I am sure he thanked you himself very well.

Am I right in thinking Stoney is from Australia? Is he the same guy who featured in the Press and Journal 12-18 months ago, or maybe a little longer?

I remember reading about a guy from Australia who had no water to his land. The Fire Brigade had used most, or all of his supply to put out a fire at a neighboring property. Was that guy Stoney?
