i was talking to someone today about the geese, we were talking about the shooting of them.
i was shocked to find out that they dont eat them, every year thousands are shot, and they dig a big pit, pour petrol over them and burn them.
i think thats sick myself, i never realised it was such a big industry goose shooting.
look at the prices on here

No no no no - shocked!! Although i don't know why i'm shocked - i should be shock proof by now. Why didn't everyone have the 'waste not, want not' mantra beaten into them as kids? I feel guilty when i overcook and don't end up eating the leftovers...to kill something in the name of sport, and then burn it. _________________ Better late than never! |

there are several reasons for them getting distroyed in this mannor
the first is due to crop destruction a flock of geese can wipe out a full field of crops in a day or two so farmers want them shooting to prevent huge losses of crops what are not shot move on some were else minimising the risk.
the second and biggest reason is there is only so much you can eat! several years back some one came up with the bright idea that you can not sell geese for consumption but you can eat them yourselves/give to mates(although that might be against the law now too) you find when you take a party of 5-10 people shooting they dont want more than a couple of birds each to take home if any so after a few days shooting they will have shoot maybe a few hundred a day but might only take 10 home between them.
in the long run the farmer wants the crops protected and the shooters want some sport but they dont want all the game they shot. some farmers receive some cash to subside there farms some allow it for free just to keep the geese of. If a goose guide is used he recives most of the money paying the farmer an amount each year for the right to shoot.
any other game shoot can be sold to a game dealer but the face huge fines if caught with geese so they just wont touch them so in the long run they end up destroyed
As for the cost Sh what you have put up is pretty cheep compared to what some guys are charging the biggest customers are Italians and they pay alot more the only thing with them is some bring a refrigerated trailer to take there geese (and other game) that they shoot home with them. They also have to pay for all there cartridges as well at 30p each and will shoot several hundred of them each day
when dad goes shooting on a syndicate they shoot ducks and geese in a evening but they have a rule that any geese you shoot YOU take home as they dont want to dispose of them. They then get a brace of other birds shot with the rest going to a game dealer and the cash goes towards next years expenses. He also goes shooting with a friend on farmers land and they will stop shooting when they have enough, Last Saturday there was three of them and they shoot 19 between them then gave up as they didnt want any more we ended up with 12 and one other guy took the other 7. We shared ours out amongst family and friends and the farmer had the geese moved off his land so every one was happy
I dont agree with the geese being destroyed and wish that they could be sold i know there is a demand for them! _________________ why do feet smell and noses run?

You could have had some here the other day, we unfortunately had 2 bird strikes on our aircraft as the geese are back in the area!

Andy, your dad's system sounds perfect. Wish more people did that.
But is shooting geese and destroying them worse than the many thousands of rabbits that are killed and left to rot/be eaten by other wildlife? Let's face it; if you are trying to produce food for humans, some wildlife has to be classed as vermin. That's what this is all called: vermin control. (I'm not saying I like it - that's just how it is.) _________________ Ina |

If we weren't so over regulated it would be easy to sell them on. I know we need strict regs for retail outlets but it shouldn't matter about private sales as long as the buyers understand they have to use their own judgement regarding the quality/ freshness etc. _________________ It is better to light a candle than to rail against the darkness
