We have had a firm out today to check our water filter system for the house. The filter guy has checked and the nitrate filter system is not in operation and the PH levels are low..this means our water is not being filtered at all... I realise this is not acceptable and things need sorting but just how safe is our water without filtration?? The guy took away a sample for annalysis but OH dealt with him and didn't ask about water saftey!! The house is rented and the landlord was the person who instigated the visit. Anyone know anything? thanks. _________________ xxx Mrs G xxx |

| The firm are the experts in filtration but a couple of observations is the landlord selling the property or just having the water checked for the Tennant's? Something for you to enquire about, why was the test done |

As far as I know he isn't selling doubt it though. I think it is because he has had to put in 3 new showers in the last 4 years. Incidentally I have had to renew my kettle, iron, dishwasher and washing machine... not that he would care about that expense!! _________________ xxx Mrs G xxx |

we never had any filters on our private supply and it was the best water i have ever drank, unless any off you have been ill lately i guess that as you have been drinking it it is prob still ok to but if you want to be on the safe side boil it first.
prob been done as landlords have obligations theese days _________________ why do feet smell and noses run?

~Can't say re the nitrates because I don't know what your water analysis is... ph levels are likely to be low in this neck of the woods. There was a pH correction unit on our water filter at Kildrummy and that sorted that out.
I can say though, that lots of people on private water supplies drink unfiltered water with no ill effects (until something goes wrong)
Interesting observation by Baldowrie re the reason for the test. _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

you only really need worry about Nitrates if you have very small children since they are subseptable. You'll easily tell if someone suffers for it, they go blue. our water suffers from excess nitrate and iron and had a low bacterial problem. we cleansed the pipes with low levels of bleach and used a stand alone ceramic filter for drinking water whilst in the caravan and we have a plumbed in ceramic filter now in the house. you only need to filter what you drink nothing else.
as has been say, a lot of people have private water supplies, quite a few with bacterial contamination including ecoli but except for very young and very old then shouldn't be a problem. same for nitrates but worth getting tested. the tests for bacterial problems are cheap about £20, nitrates, minerals etc costs about £80. you can get someone from the council to do for you or privately. stand alone ceramic filter kits costs about £100

There were grants available from the council for water filters etc - wonder whether this is why your landlord has had the tests done. _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

yep the built in UV filters to kill the bugs are about £400 but you can apply for a grant for it - for the whole cost. We forgot and then you cant do it retrospectively so got £0.00p! no change there then... _________________ Happiness is a Haflinger! |

if the tests where being done because your landlord was selling or after getting a grant for water filtration/improvement it would have been someone from enviromental health/council who would have carried out the tests. you dont say whether you already have filters fitted, but i would think it was a good thing your landlord is having the water tested as most wouldn't bother or care.
