These calls are certainly irritating, but unfortuntely a fact of life - the telephone equivalent of spam I s'pose...
You can register for all these preference services, and ask to be taken off or their calling list, but inevitably you will still get these calls. Even if from someone else!
Hanging up, or asking the caller to wait and then leaving the phone on the side for a while before hanging up (for example, while you go out and feed your animals) can be effective and pleasurable I find. Sales callers, who are usually paid on commission, don't appreciate it much.
Plus, if someone calls you, regardless of the reason, dont' forget you are not obliged to speak to them. Even the ones who call and then ask you to identify yourself! How annoying is that?
Personally I adopt the policy that I never buy anything on a cold call. Never. Not even in business. Once they tell me who they are (usually in the introduction) I have all the information I need to follow up if I choose to do so. At my leisure and discretion, not theirs.
What always crosses my mind is that if what they are offering is so good I shouldn't miss it, they wouldn't need to contact me to tell me about it in the first place. For a start someone else would have, but also if it was so great, the spaces or allocation or whatever would already have been filled!
I guess this practice doesn't suit everyone.

we registered for those services in the past but they always seem to have an expiry date. You don't find out that you need to re-register until the calls start up again and you query it.
I registered for caller ID and if it says international or I don't recognise the number, I just don't pick up now. The way I see it, it saves their time and mine - win, win. _________________ It is better to light a candle than to rail against the darkness

Just to let you know, you have to sign up for this every year, or your request lapses. _________________ No single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood.

I didn't know that you had to apply annually, PD - I wonder if it's new?
I signed up to the TPS nearly 10 years ago, and still don't get sales calls, (apart from the occasional recorded US ones) despite being in the directory...
I am always very careful to tick/untick any boxes to not allow any organisation to contact me by telephone, and wonder if some cold calling comes through this route, as you always have to read the statement very carefully before working out which is the option for them not to contact you... _________________ “I was not. ditto about signing up.
The service only stops those companies that use their services so it won't stop all call. |
