This week I've had two suspect phone calls, so be aware and watch what you tell people.
The first call was from a 'company' which had noticed an increase of crime in our area , and were offering 4 'lucky' homes free security, lo and behold, we were one of those lucky 4. The woman then asked what kind of security we had. I said 'we have 7 dogs and they are quite effective', her resopnse was ' we'll you won't be interested in our offer' and hung up.
They claimed to be SAS security, and there are a couple of companies called this, one who does make these offers and you then end up with a bill in the thousands, my other worry was whether they were sussing out how secure our house was- anyway be careful.
The next day, the phone rang and when I picked up the caller hung up, I did 1471 and then searched on line and this is another dogdy scam.
The number does not accept in coming calls and is 01224 280170. |

Yeah, we've had a few calls from CR Smith and a place flogging bathrooms, all this despite us being on the BT list to NOT get sales calls.
The handy thing (for us anyway) is that if you get one of BT's free packages, you get caller display for free (you normally pay for it) and that helps us see if it looks like a potentially dodgy call or not (ie if we know the number or if it lists someone from our contacts).
If it looks possibly iffy, it'll go to the answerphone if we don't want to answer... most of the time they just hang up
Can't mind what package it was that I got with BT to get that though... it's a free "add-on" type thing rather than a call package IYKWIM. |

| I've had 3 dodgy phone calls since yesterday. As soon as the recorded message starts, I switch the phone off and hang up. It is getting to be a real pain in the butt. Unfortunately, though I'm with BT I do not have Caller Display. I am also bombarded with calls for the previous tenant, who is deceased. I got so fed up answering these calls that I told them to hire a spiritualist medium to try and contact her. That shut them up, at least for the time being. |

That's one of the reason why my number is ex directory and withheld.
On the crime front I would have to agree it has increased and we had a spate of petty thieving round where I am, petrol lawn mowers seems to be the main target but a children's buggy has gone too. |

My 83 year old mother has Vascular Dementia & Alzheimers, she is ex-directory but still got conned into giving her card number last week.I managed to cancel the card before any transactions took place(I hope).I have Power of Attorney & monitor her accounts on line.I cut up her card & told her that the bank manager advises me to keep the new card for more security. She is now telling people that I won't give her a card & that I have taken all her money. _________________ www.scotia-aquatics.co.uk |

we are lucky, my gran accepts the "your like the queen" and she even repeats it now. But then she never was any good with money and is glad to not have the responsibility. _________________ Smile |

Have you signed up for telephone preferrence service?
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
It does help and you also report any calls that go through to them and they ivestigate...mmm BT springs to mind telling me to report the caller, themselves
The other thing when they call say to them
'I do not wish to receive these calls, remove me from your calling list immediately'. They are then legally bound to remove you and not call again. But once doesn't always work first time and once again TPS should be told. |

I registered for TPS and still got calls up to 3 months later, complained and they said I wasnt registered (even tho I had email conf....).Have registered again but it can take up to a month to take effect. Drives me mad the sales calls, almost enough for me to dump the landline altogether except for internet connection.
grrrrr
So if one of you ring me and I sound cross when I first answer the phone, its not you Im cross at!!! _________________ Happiness is a Haflinger! |

i get the same, in tge end i changed my number and went ex directory.
it hasnt helped. i just get different ones now and more of them.
so now i tell people that i rarely answer the phone, so they are best emailing or texting me to tell me they are ringing. as i have now switched it off. seems to be the only way |
