I am currenlty reading the second in the Erth's Children series, by Jean M Auel.

No1 in the series is called Clan of the Cave Bear and is about Ayla, who is orphaned at age 5 by an earthquake in prehistoric times. She is taken in by The Clan (Neandethals) and raised by them to become a medicine woman.

The book is great, and makes you feel as if the writer was actually there. The descriptions are interesting, but she does tend to go on a bit, and they become boring and repetitive after a while. I skip all the boring bits, which means I probably miss some of the story, but I have read them often enough that it doesn't matter.

No2 is called Valley of The Horses and is about Ayla after she leaves the Clan and tries to find The Others - her own people. She ends up wintering in a valley and adopts a steppes pony and a cave lion, raises them, and lives with them. The book also introduces Jondalar, who is on a Journey. This is the book I am reading just now.

The next in the series, The Mammoth Hunters, is by far my favourite. After that are the Plains Of Passage then the Shelters of Stone. It will be a six book series and the last is eagerly awaited by fans all over the world though there's no indication of when it will come out. My set has been re-read many times  8)

Although it gets tedious after a while, the descriptions of what the steppes and glaciers would probably have looked liked way back then are interesting, particularly if you are interested in flora and fauna. Also, the descriptions of medicines used then are interesting, although I would be loathe to actually try any of them! LOL

I think she takes so long between books because of all the research she puts into them.

There is also a film, although I haven't seen it, made of the first book. It stars Daryl Hannah.

I've seen the film. It's a little bit cheesy.

Daryl Hannah. It can't help being cheesy with her in it!
