I have been trying to connect my lap top to broadband using wireless it says it is connected but i can not go online. Any ideas?

We've had real problems with our computer and have blamed it on the lightning, although we have been careful to unplug everything when there is a storm around if we are home.

It turned out to be a problem with the BT line, but we had to contact the server to find out. It was a pain in the neck!

I used to use it before using wireless but we changed modem so I had to update the software but now it is now working. At the bottom of my screen it says that it is connected but when I try it same to check the server connection.

If you were using wireless and changed the router, then you wouldn't need to change any software.

You would however need to setup the router again with your username/password, wifi settings, etc

If you take a fresh router out of a box and plug it in and switch on, you will possibly get connected to the router... but unless you tell the router what to then connect to, then that is all you will see.

If however you can connect a network cable to the router and THAT works, then there may be another configuration issue. Could be that the wireless settings are dishing out the wrong set of Ip addresses or something compared to the wired connections (unlikely unless someone has been playing with it though).

Best bet is to narrow it down.

Can you connect to the net when you have connected via a network cable but not via wifi?

If you can't connect at all, bear in mind that your username/password for your internet won't nessecarily be the same as your email address/password, also some ISPs need you to put in the whole address as the username (ie username@isp.com rather than just username).

I can connect if I use the cable.

Check that the wifi settings are actually giving you the same IP settings then. Occasionally they can be setup differently.

ie if your router was 192.168.1.1 and was dishing out 192.168.1.x addresses on cable, but 192.168.2.x addresses via wifi.

Would also probably be worth initially disabling all of the security side of the wifi to make sure it's not causing any issues. Then once you know it's working properly, you can start adding passkeys and/or mac code security, etc back on one by one.
