We thought about it and then decided that we would give them some time to iron out some of the snags first because there are bound to be teething problems.
I did hear that it is not very compatable with a lot of software, but would be happy to be corrected on that one by someone who has used it

No, stay with the XP.
Vista is fine but it does issues with compatibility and I have had stability problems. I do like it but if you already have XP don't waste your money at the present time

if you like your games, software, hardware etc to work straight out of the box, stick with xp for the while is my advice. if you have the time, and don't mind taking the time to have a fiddle, Vista is pretty good. if you have tha hardware for it of course...

Hi Werain
I have been using Vista for several months now and I'm getting on OK with it. I do have a few issues with some of my older applications which aren't quite compatible but they limp along.
I never went to XP because I didn't like it, I stuck with Win 2000 so it was quite a big change for me.
Since I had to have a new PC, I thought I may as well go with the new operating system. Not sure I'd be so keen to upgrade to it.
It has some nice features and some very annoying ones but don't ask me what they are, as I've got used to them now and forgotten about them!

Yep!
I was going to upgrade my children's computers from xp but apart from the huge amount memory I have read it needs I decided not to as those annoying parts would not be helpful to the children and drive my son crazy

IMO, Vista is fine if you buy it with a new machine but there is absolutely no reason to upgrade from XP to Vista on an existing machine.
I run both on my laptop, dual boot XP and Vista but I only ever use Vista, XP is just there for running some phone software (which doesn't run under Vista) and for checking out issues someone else may be having with XP which I need to test.
I do like Vista and generally everything I have used works okay with it, although in some cases you need to get a newer version of the software to work.
If you are getting Vista then I'd recommend 2Gb of RAM as a minimum for it to run properly, otherwise you'll feel like it's miles slower than XP on the same machine.

We brought in a new machine with 1Gb of RAM but it felt like it wasn't much of an upgrade to the older PC[1] that the lassie had originally... all machines since then have come with 2Gb of RAM.
[1] - Which was running XP with 256Mb of RAM, which the video card was stealing some of the memory to run... machine was underspec'd when it was bought.

mine is 2GB and pre loaded with vista...laptop. I was going to upgrade the children's computers but have decided with all I have read and what I seen, not at present. I do have 512mb of extra to load into my sons computer once his warranty is up and that should take his up to 2 GB...the extra came out of old non working and not worth repairing computers.

I hate it, I hate it, I HATE IT
It's really my fault though. My laptop was in the car and I was in a hurry so surely hit a speed bump too fast. When I took out the laptop the screen was broken. It's about 4 years old so not repairable. It is insured but I really needed a laptop so bought one for £300. I didn't really think about the programming until I got it home. After a few days I was ready to put it in the bin and buy another one! It should never have been loaded with Vista as with 512MB ram it couldn't run properly. I couldn't get my copy of Office to load and other programmes I used wouldn't load either.
I couldn't get the work ichain login to work as the security is too tight even at the lowest setting and it drove me mad.
I took Vista off and loaded XP - it was a faff finding all the drivers but it is different computer altogether now! My Mum will get it and I'll buy a better one - possibly with Vista and Office installed, however it would do me if she didn't need an upgrade.
