What to do in Huntly

Walks around Huntly
(I posted this on a Hello to someone else who lives in the area)

There are some lovely walks - we like to wander around The Bin Forest. There are quite a few marked paths through it. Have you found it yet? Just a couple of miles out of Huntly on the A96 as if going towards Keith. In the town a wander down the Deveron River by the Castle is always good - although OH went for a run down there a whiley back and said that the recent high waters took some of the river path with it! Not sure how good it will be for a pram? Have you had a walk past the school, past the castle, and up to the castle hotel?

The Meadows is nice - around the back of the school on the opposite side to the castle - some nice wee bits of woodland and burns. Went on a litter pick with the school a couple of weeks ago - so should be tidy for a while.   I'm told Battlehill is also nice - but haven't been there yet - it's a must for me, as I believe a community woodland group is emerging, which I'd like to get involved in.

I love the town and should spend more time having a nosey. Did you know that the single standing stone in the square used to belong to a much bigger stone circle? I've not heard of a town built on the site of a circle before. Which reminds me - must get another local history book out of the library. I love the library in Huntly - and the light shining through the stained glass.

Thanks Maria,

If anyone else has ideas of 'what to do in Huntly' please add to this thread, preferably giving an idea of whether the activity is suitable for people with children/disabled access info and any website details.

The nordic skiing centre has practice areas for skiing and roller skiing (which looks like great fun), tubing and bike hire too. http://www.nordicski.co.uk/hnoc/

Huntly - birthplace of George MacDonald

I don't just know about composting!!!

George MacDonald was a victorian writer.  He is famous for his works of fantasy and childrens books, fairie stories - as well as his general fiction.

Look in the library for a  sculpture by Kenny Hunter inspired by one of George MacDonald's works. Ask in the tourist info for a guide to a walk around the town pointing out things of interest relating to MacDonald.  Be sure to pop in by 2nd hand book shop, Orbs Bookshop, run by Annie Lamb - which usually has a selection of old and reprints of his work.

Be sure to take a look at the Gordon Schools as well - lots of history from the days of the Gordon Clan.

I spend my secondary years there.
