Rose hips (not red yet though)

Hmm, bilberrys - Ina, help please. Were the ones you had last year at the end of the Edzell Woods road?

Wild rasps not ready here yet, but the rest are. Fat hen a-plenty too.
kimmie

the Blaeberrys/Bilberrys are out in force now, you will find it on moor landsand Peat fields amoungst the heather, you will also see Crowberry.

This is crowberry, its very high in vitamin C

Blaeberry/Bilberry

both these plants are tiny in stature.

Wild Raspberrys are also out now, we harvest a few from our driveway yesterday
Diana

Thanks for that Kimmie - came in very handy today (see other threads).

I also found some Bog Myrtle (good for keeping midges away - apparently 0 and smells divine). Ina - have checked and yes, that's definately the stuff I showed you earlier.

Also found some red berries that I think are edible (didn't try them) in profusion. Will post a pick when I get them out the camera - like like a mini cranberry perhaps?
wildgarlic

must get picking blaeberries then!

Bog myrtle - didn't someone make beer from that?

Red berries - Diana, could they be cowberry? Cowberry
gussyboy

Makes my chanterelle hunt seem a bit sad by comparison, however I reckon because of the weather this year, it's going to be a great year for mushrooms, cheries and nuts?

cheers Gussyboy
earthroots

could the 'mini-cranberries' be cowberries - they grow in the acid soil among pine trees like the blaeberries - same family as cranberries - nutritious but not as tasty as the blaes - I've tried making a sauce and not been much impressed so far any good recipes anyone?.
flingdizz

Yesterday I collected heaps of blaeberries, wild raspberries and ceps. Tonight is cep lasagne followed by raspberries and home made ice cream!
kimmie

must admit i had to look up ceps...didnt realise they were Boletus
anyway here they are for others

..only ones i knew where Penny bun

Horse mushroom is now out...you tend to see them along the verge by country roads as they are less distirbed but ploughing and livestock....Matty and I had 3 lovely ones yesterday, but becarful as they can contain lots of maggots, when collecting them, snap the head away from the stem...maggots are usually in the head at that join.http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes...d-entry.php?term=Horse%20Mushroom
gussyboy

Do you know if my information is correct or not? I was once told that field or horse mushrooms at the side of busy roads were not advised to eat because of the heavy pollution caused by traffic.
Is this tosh and nonsense?

cheers, Gussyboy
Smooth Hound

its true, you dont really want to pick anything to eat from the side of the road,
kimmie

although i only ever find them at the side of roads, we only pick the young ones and we make sure its a road without heavy traffic....never done us any harm, especiall as when you cook them the heat kills 90% of the germs etc
Smooth Hound

its not the germs, its the exhaust fumes , the plants absorb it.
Maria

Collected a few raspberries (memory shoddy, could have sworn the ones in the forest were blackberries) and luckily spotted some blackberries on the way home.

Made a delicious forest fruit fool

The Hawthorn bushes are absolutely laden with berries down here...

Noticed HFW made a haw-sin sauce to go with his ducks last night on river cottage autumn

My dad always used to say that worms in apples and maggots in mushrooms would be 99.9% apple or mushroom anyway, so not to worry!
kimmie

rose hips
rowan (although these are quickly going over)
hawthorn
Damsons

We picked crowberries on Sunday on the Menie Links - lots of them there.  Another reason why Donald Trump should not build his resort there!!
kimmie

Hmmm not sure if it should go here or gardening section, but I found 5 field mushrooms.....in my own paddock!!...lucky i guess that the goats didnt trample them!
Maidenstone

Make sure they haven't got any 'currants' on them!!
KitchenKleet

Half a kilo of ceps by accident last week, first I've found this year!
kimmie

I found this mushroom/toadstool when i was out with Matty's sister recently....can anyone identify it??
