virus killer on pc

Hey folks,

I'm using norton at the moment, but its really annoying me and the subscription runs out this week.

Can anyone suggest a better virus killer for my pc?

avg free - I had so many problems with norton... got rid (and had to download a special tool to do so) and most of the problems disappeared.

Sorry, but AVG free is a load of rubbish.  It lulled me into a false sense of security a while back and let in a very nasty trojan.

I now use Kaspersky, it's about £30 a year but worth it.

That's scary... sooooooooo - is there any way we can use one as a regular virus checker.. and then double check it using an another?

To be honest, if you get decent anti virus software running, you shouldn't need to double check.

Btw, one of the nasties AVG let in was a virus that convinced my computer (and Microsoft) that I was running a counterfeit version of XP and wouldn't let me update anything.  Complete rubbish as XP was installed by the manufacturer from new.  It took ages to get rid of the irritating messages that kept cropping up.

I use AVG on my computer but on the children's I use avast as that says 'virus data base has been up dated' daily so reminds them to check!

Go to www.download.com

I have not had any trouble with either of these and neither has my mother but then we do update every day and scan every day, twice if things look suspicious.

When I had norton my computer got so infected it crashed, without it giving any warning of infections and being very naive of computers at the time I hadn't realised my programs were being 'eaten' by a worm.

absolute piffle.
AVG regularly gets tested against, and beats, paid for AV.
I've tried a bunch, paid for and otherwise, and I always  end up going back to avg, for the ease of use and peace of mind.
AVG free, a good firewall, and adaware and you're as safe as you can be.

Well, AVG let viruses into my computer.  Neither AVG or myself knew they were there until it was too late.

With Kaspersky, I can go onto a site and it will register a threat, whereas computers with Norton, AVG or Macaffee show nothing.

I know what I'm sticking with.

Have to say that I've never had a warning from norton or avg to say that a site might be dodgy. I had a warning on firefox yesterday when a sig on this site was causing a certification problem, but that wasn't avg telling me.

Interesting!

We also use AVG after many problems with Norton and no problems as yet.....

I've just started an online scan with Kaspersky - if it unearths any hidden viruses that will help to convince me one way or another.
wildgarlic

well... it's found one virus already and it's just 1% into the scan of critical areas. No further details at present as it's still scanning. Will report back.

When I first installed Kaspersky, it came up with 6 viruses that were just sitting there, not detected at all by AVG & this is precisely my point.  You think you're OK because it all runs smoothly.

Pretty much everyday one of us gets a message from Kaspersky warning of a keylogger.  These aren't 'dodgy' sites, just normal everyday stuff.  Pretty scary, and I know AVG won't pick them up.

You get what you pay for, I guess?

go here................

that will find anything and everything at the mo i run bit defender i ran that scan lastnight and after it finished i ran trend they both found not a sausage .
I had norton with my isp for free what a load of poop it was too, the damn thing wouldn't even download active x stuff and blocked all emails so thats why i now have bitdefender.

Actually AVG was tested against a number of others in one test and found to be almost pointless having installed in a number of occasions. I was quite surprised as I'd always found it to be okay and it picked up anything on my machine.

I think using a range of things, firewall (either on the router or a software one), anti virus software plus ad aware type programs and ones like spybot regularly is the safest way as anti virus programs will not pick up everything.

That sums it up IanC!

It is imposable for an anti-virus to stop everything.
It may pick it up later on, but there are always virus writers out there ahead of the game and some is bound to get through!

I do an on-line scan every now and again and all it ever finds is some cookies!

AVG FREE is free and just as good as the paid for one (Though some of the updated to a different version lags a few days behind) and remember it is free and so are some others that work just as well.

I console myself that at least AVG updates every day when there is something to update and it doesn't leave it till the end of the week like some others that you pay a lot of money for.

I tried a few others and always come back to AVG.

It doesn't hog the system either.

You pays your money and takes your choice, in AVG's case it is free as is some others.

You can pay for the same service if you want to!  :?

Used lots of av and i thing avg is the best but don't forget zone alarm both of these   can be 'bought' but i really like them i have ran norton and avg on the same computer and avg always came up with lots more virus then norton ever did.
I have been 'called' in to sort a lot of computer which had norton on them and they slowed up the computers/laptop up.

Each to their own

I now have kaspersky and am very happy with it. I went for the full package as it was about £15 in costco.

I also bit the bullet and bought a new pooter - yup, a pc rather than a mac as it was cheaper and for me that was a big plus at the moment. I do have a rather cool 22" screen now and it makes it so much easier to deal with the long spreadsheets of the suma order, and is great for photos etc.
