Tiny Turbines could power a home Link
| Quote: | Everybody wants to have a cleaner Earth, but few of them take any actions. One of those people is Doug Selsam, who designed high-power wind turbines that can generate enough energy to power a home. The wind turbines measure about 14-18 inches in diameter and they can generate an impressive amount of 200 watts for a 20 mph wind, but the wind turbines could do better if the winds are stronger.
Selsam’s wind turbines are made of high-strength carbon fiber materials which give the turbines the possibility to be hooked as one. This system is very simple and it weighs a bit, as you see, it can be held in one hand. For the moment, there is no word about release date or availability, therefore I can only say that it’s an interesting concept |

There is still going to be the problem of wind turbulance in built up areas to contend with

Not a problem where I live... I just wanna know when we can start buying them and how much.
There'd be a bit of alterations required to have a house running on wind/solar power but I reckon that you could quite easily run a parallel system in alongside the std power sockets, etc.
That way you could easily power lights, etc from your battery grid and as and when (if) you ran out simply switch over to using the standard power supply.
Would also be easy enough to have a second set of power sockets in each room (maybe colour coded?) so you could be running your PC or whatever on your offgrid supply and then if you were running out you could use the mains. Would be the easiest/cheapest way to get into it I think, as you could start off small and simply keep extending what you were able to run off it as and when you built up a larger battery bank and/or supply of power from solar or wind.

Great idea. I keep on seeing the small turbines popping up all over the place and wondering what the nieghbours/planners would say if I wanted to blonk one in my garden.

I think as long as you mount it in such a way that you can take it down (ie fold it over) then it's classed as a temp structure and therefore doesn't require planning anyway... same goes for if you mount it on a trailer/caravan/etc.

While I've been doing research for our potential turbine, I have been told that planners should be 'mindful to accept' I'm assuming this means they have to have a pretty strong reason to try and turn you down.

Yeah, think that they have relaxed the laws on solar and wind "projects" now so would probably require a fairly strong reason to turn you down, probably more of an issue for people in villages/towns that those who are out in the countryside I'd have thought.
