I love these cheeses - totally delicious and well produced and available at a deli near you. Such fab names too... wummle (both muckle wummle and wee wummle) ... clachnaben, morven, Learney (my favourite so far) and the newest addition to the range, the Babbity Blue.

"The Craigmyle Cheese Company is our artisan cheese making business nestled in the heart of Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. We make beautiful cheeses using traditional, hand-made methods with the highest quality, unpasteurised milk which we source from one local organic dairy.
The milk that makes our cheese so unique comes from Glasgoforest, an organic farm at Kinellar run by Anne Willis and her son William , winner of RABDF/Barclays Bank student of the year 2006 and Scottish winners of the national grassland management competition 2005. The Willis’ herd is mainly Holstein/Friesian with a few Ayrshires. The Willis family are focused on the wellbeing of their herd - the cows enjoy a stress-free, comfortable environment. Contented cows mean good milk. Good milk is the first step towards great cheese.

No more Craigmyle cheese ??I think that Craigmyle cheese stopped producing in Feb 2008.
A big shame, as it's really hard to get good organic cheese, and it was fabulous having a local producer, using local organic milk.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. A very sad loss indeed - their cheeses were delicious.

I wasn't all that keen on their cheeses - I regret the loss of the ewe's milk dairy in New Deer more!
Just trying to think if any of the other local dairies are organic, but I believe not. The one in Banchory Devenick makes nice cheese, but isn't organic.
Well, I know I should have won the lottery - then I could have bought them out...

I wasn't overly fond of their cheese either except for the Wummel/wee wummel which was one of our biggest sellers. Now I'm a huge fan of Devenicks Badentoy Blue. Its superb.

I heard some rumblings that Craigmyle might be getting going again, possibly in partnership with the Crannach Bread team. Has anyone else heard anything more definite??

Well there are plans lodged with Aberdeenshire Council for a purpose built dairy near to Crannach - and there were some cheesemaking jobs advertised in the paper last week - starting at Torphins and then moving to Dinnet I think it said.

Excellent! Now we just need a local organic dairy to set up a bottling plant to offer non-homogenised truly local low-miles milk!

Yes - they have massive plans for that new dairy - but it won't be organic. Don't want to tell more online, as I don't know how much they want it to be known yet. And it doesn't really have anything to do with Craigmyle; it'll be a different company altogether.
So still no local organic cheese.

Shame it's not going to be organic but at least they'll use some milk from their own herd.

yes, a missed opportunity there! £1 million project ... wow - they must be hoping to sell a heck of a lot of cheese!!
so not the Crannach bread folk then ... or any mention of Craigmyle.
it'll be great to get a few more cheesemakers in the area tho ... I heard an interesting episode of the 'food programme' a couple of weeks ago where they were investigating problems with some big cheese makers who'd spent a fortune upgrading and modernising their cheese making buildings, and the cheese had changed to something horrible that they couldn't sell. Apparently it was due to subtle differences in temperature, humidity, and the natural bacteria in the atmosphere. so it sounds like it's quite an art to make a good cheese, and to then keep it consistent!

They are. Definitely big business, and not just local.

It's opposite the Crannach bakery, and they will, no doubt, be doing something with them - if only using their shop/cafe as an outlet! The connection with Craigmyle is that they will be using those premises to start off, while the new place is being built.
