The adder 'ad him

Quote:
Poison warning after snake in the grass bites the hand that seized it

WHEN Billy MacAskill spotted a snake slithering through the heather, he thought he had the perfect photo opportunity.
Eagerly plucking the adder out of the undergrowth, the grouse beater posed for photos with members of his Highland shooting party.

Hours later, he was in hospital being told a bite he received on his thumb after losing grip of the snake could have been fatal.

Eejit!

If you're out walking in heath/moorland there are likely to be adders around you. You can count yourself lucky if you see one - they'll usually scarper when they hear you crashing through the undergrowth.

Adders have a pronounced V on the back of their head (unlike the harmless grass snakes and slow worms).

Needless to say, never disturb them if you do see them and don't pick them up.

I'm surprised this guy reacted so badly to the bite - they're usually worse in the spring, when the snakes have been hibernating all winter and are full of venom

You'd think that gamekeepers know we have adders, and been more circumspect when this chap was bitten. Surely the shoot has a duty of care towards its employees?

But another part of me thinks what an idiot for picking it up for a photo op... too much testosterone?
