Tatties in compost bagMy tatties are growing nicely in my compost bag but i was wondering, as the leaves grow should I keep topping up the soil to cover the whole leave or just the stem of the leaves?
and you know what I have no idea how more tatties are produced from planting seed tatties - somebody enlighten me please ha ha

i would top up so the leaves are poking out the top. one potatoe will prob produce 8 to 12 new ones, i think, never tried it in bags though, so let us know later in the yr how it went

IIRC the Wijja are medium cropping, about 8 tatts to one seed tatt. The Duke of York and heavy cropping so you could get 12. However, remember, you're growing them in bags so they'll be smaller (more like a salad tattie)
Keep bunding the soil on as you would in an ordinary row in the garden - i cover the bottom third - and remember to douse regularly in the early morning/evening in this weather.

Mine are coming along nicely too. Have about 7 bags of Pentland Javelin earlies. Took them out of the poly today...and have earthed them up (filled the bag up) at least 3 or 4 times now. The bag I left outside hasn't needing earthing up at all yet...so glad I got them started in the poly.
Hope yours are doing as well Angie. Be good to share info on how many we get to the bag.

Going for a no dig border for my maincrop...hoping it's not too late. I put the poop, cardboard and straw (thanks to Ironworker!) down this weekend and am hoping to get the tatties in this week. I'm thinking of getting some roosters from the shops and putting them in if I can't find any seed ones...more thanks to Julie for the idea.
