Re: Supermarket begins selling milk in a bag!
Back in history (ie when I was at primary school ) we used to get milk provided by the school. Was originally in cartons, etc but I remember getting milk in bags then... can't imagine why they thought it was a good idea giving P1 and P2 kids bags of milk to drink... not the easiest thing in the world
Would also imagine that milk in a bag would be hard to store in the fridge

We had milk in bags when I was young(er)... However, they must have thought cartons were better - i.e. proper cartons, not plastic bottles as you mostly get in Britain - as that's what Germany went over to a long time ago. We all needed a stiff plastic holder for the bags; and yes, the danger of leakage was greater, so storing a lot in the fridge wasn't really an option. But then, that was the time when you still normally went shopping at least every other day, because there were still enough shops locally to do that...

I think they should sell milk in glass pop bottles that you get 10p back on when you take the bottle back to the shop.

Nope that'll never happen - far too sensible an idea

I'm just reading various books on food issues from a few years back, i.e. 70s, 80s etc - only about 25 years ago 85% of all milk sold in the UK was "doorstep milk"!!! How quickly this has changed...

i remember the milk being in bottles at school...winter it would freeze and rise above the bottle and you had to chip it or suck it like a lollie...spring and autumn the birds would peck at it for the cream and summer it would be sat in the sun, and go off before you got to drink it!!.....ahhh yes!! them were the days lol

Yeah - but the problem wasn't the bottles, it was that they couldn't be bothered to put them in fridges...
That was the problem I had with "doorstep" milk, too: it was delivered too late for me to put it away. And by night the birds had been at it, or worse.

I remember those wee bottles.... we used to get the extras at the end of the day... never sour, but sometimes quite warm from the sun.... never did us any harm either.

sure is at least we can put plastic bottles out for recycling!
Personally i will stick with the bottles i think, easier to open and much less milk on the floor, imagine kids opening it ,
a bottle fits in the fridge door better than a bag or the jug you would have to put it in once open.
i see that waitrose will sell a jug to keep it in more profits for them,
if we went back to glass bottles that we sent back for washing that would be the best but dont think it would work.
Plus its dearer to buy in a bag, so will stick to a bottle and recycle it once it is empty

Haven't seen it there for the last 30 years - as I said above, they did try that when I was young, but stopped doing it! Unless it's a regional thing - quite possible. Don't know too much about the South.

OK, I admit it - I don't know too much about the East, either!

When we first moved to Shetland the milk was sold in bags - 1980. You could get a jug that the milk bag fitted in and you cut the corner off. Fell out of use into cartons and plastic bottles. Never had the glass bottle option here. Shetland dairies can supply the whole island group with milk, also does butter and yogurt- annoys me to see 'south' milk in the supermarkets.

The only non-Shetland milk I saw in Lerwick was organic; and although I would usually buy that, I prefer to buy local on an island any time!

My dad and Gran get their milk delivered and at one point quite a few years back they were asked what they would prefer to get their milk in, so my dad chose the cartons and my Gran chose the bottles. So the bottles have always been on the go, but maybe just not for general sale.
