Stores told to disclose packaging | Quote: | UK supermarkets should be forced to reveal how much packaging they produce, local councils say.
The Local Government Association (LGA) said only Morrisons, Waitrose, and Marks & Spencer responded to its request for details on packaging.
The remaining five it asked, including Tesco and Sainsbury's, referred the LGA to the waste reduction body Wrap.
However, Wrap said it publishes data only for the grocery sector as a whole, not for individual stores. |

ill be glad if it encourages them to use less wrapping, its fairly ridiculous the amount they use, noy only because of the landfill problem, but also if something is wrapped in something three times its size then it means 3 times the amunt of lorries delivering it to the supermarkets, meaning 3 times the amount of fuel needed

I think there is a shop in Inverurie where you can take your own packaging to buy stuff. I have never been there because it isn't local to us so I hope it's still in business.
Maybe someone else can give it a better plug and provide more info.

greengroceri can certainly recommend the greengrocer in inverurie. They sell dry goods eg spices, herbs, flour etc from large containers that you can put into your own containers. They also do refills for ecover type products.
When we lived closer to Inverurie we used them a lot but unfortunately its not so handy for us now.

The Green Grocer at the corner of West High Street and Western Road is a great shop (winner of a Green Butterfly award) and as JamesB has said, they sell loose dry goods. I used to buy Damsons from them every year to make jam, but they lost their supplier for some reason. I always used to take empty jam jars (with lids), flower pots that were excess to requirements and those polystyrene strips for planting seeds/seedlings in, egg boxes etc. They were always glad of them. The owners at that time were former Councillor Millar and his wife and they used some of the little pots for their excess plants, which they sold in the shop.

I visited the 'Greengrocers' last year. It's a lovely shop, jam packed with wholesome goodies. It was tricky not to come out without something I hadn't thought I needed beforehand. Or maybe that's just me. Great to know it's still going strong.
The only time (so far) i use my own wrappings is when the fish van calls by.

Is there a local fish van? I have been desperate for decent fish since moving up here.

I've started taking a casserole dish when I go out to the fish van, so that I don't have to dispose of fishy smelling wrapping papers in the garbage can.

Yeah - he's not called by for a couple of weeks, but is usually in Huntly town Wed mid morning. He generally calls by early afternoon if I'm around. I think two vans visit Huntly as I'm pretty sure Deadlegs (Carol) uses someone else. Next time he calls by I'll get a telephone number for you.
