statutory regulation of herbalistsAfter spending years deliberating the best route for statutory regulation (SR) of herbalists and acupuncturists the govt has gone to consultation with a very short timescale for public comment.
If SR fails at this late stage it may severely restrict the public's choice of healthcare and their access to medicinal herbs. If you have any feelings at all on this matter please read the sections on the Herb Society's website http://www.herbsociety.org.uk/current-news.htm and that of the National Institute of Medical herbalists http://www.nimh.org.uk/press_rele...-and-traditional-Chinese-medicine
then have your say (the link to govt consultation is on the NIMH page) &/or write to your MP before 2nd November.

Thanks for this. Will do my best to read and contribute - i'd like more mainstream awareness of herbal medicines....i've had to find what little i know about it out for myself.
Been ever so busy of late, may i ask if the links are complicated reads?

Hi Maria,
No neither are complicated reads although as you might expect the actual govt discussion document is horrendously complex but both NIMH and the Herb Society have tried to simplify it as much as they can.
If you are interested in herbs generally then you might find it useful to join the Herb Society - they have a magazine with articles by medical herbalists, herb growers, recipes and new items and also a web site as in my original post. At the moment most of their events are rather south England biassed but if there were more members up here perhaps we'd get something off the ground.
But please try and find time to read about the regulation issue as I think we may be on the verge of losing access to almost all herbal medicines if we aren't careful.

herbsi'm really interested in this too. I think Prince Charles has done a lot to keep different therapies etc publicized alongside medicnes. I have something somewhere on his trying to get things more regulated to keep them 'out there, but I'm rusty on this as haven't done any reflexolgy in 2 years. Hoping the link stays for a few days though as put back out yesterday and can't do anything in a position for more than five mins and bleary on medication. Herb magazine sounds great!

Hi guys - there is now an online petition you can also sign - but deadline is tomorrow.
It is at
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/herbal-ban/
the deadline for the overall consultation has however been extended to 16th November so there is still time for you to write to your MP or fill in the online consultation questions.
Thanks for your help

RegulationI realize that the worse possible outcome would be devastating after your degree and all the work you've put into it but 'on a positive note,' I believe people will always come to herbalists even if payment was by a barter system.
I'm not insured as a Reflexologist anymore as I'm not practising with other things going on in life but I've been to known to give occasional treatments to trusted people for candles, bubble bath etc. These days LOL!!!!!! it would take a free shed delivered here for my chooks but boy there would be a lot of reflex mileage in that!!!!
(Not a hint!!!! Just put back out, would seize up in seconds LOL)

OMGoodness....just looked at the consultation!! Why do they have to make everything look so difficult. It's time someone taught folks who create 'public' consultations how to write plain english! Add to that how easy it is to find this consultation (wouldn't have known it existed without you PC) and i'm guessing it's not something that's anyone would know about until decisions have already been made for us. Consultation....pah.
Thanks again for pointing this out PC. Can't fill the doc in now...cold has befuddled my thinking...but will do before the 2nd.
FMN...i'm not joining in lol at your poorly back (although you did say your shuffle is pretty hee hee ha ha ). Seriously - strict rest for you at min. Sending you dollops of 'feel better soon' thoughts.

I wish I could offer a positive perspective on this but unfortunately not. If there is a determination towards statutory regulation then it will happen. MSPs will already have been told how they are voting and that will be the end of the matter. Any current regulatory body will be found cowering in the corner muttering "it wisnae me, it was a big boy done it and ran away"!
This happened recently with chartered psychologists where only the chosen few were selected from the professional membership body for automatic transfer to the health professions council for statutory regulation. Over 2000 practising psychologists who had not trained through a specified route, (such as clinical or educational psychology) and even if they were better qualified than those transferred, were told to pay for their own transfer. A bargain at £700.
In this sneeze and I'll sue you culture, as long as nanny state is seen to be protecting everyone with reams of registers and registrants, then they can continue to turn their backs to the wind and mutter "it wisnae me"!

I fear the "consultation" will be yet another example of the government's version of democracy and listening to the electorate - "well, we've made up our minds, but we'll go through the motions of actually listening to you (stupid peasants) - we've done the deals, trousered the brown envelopes from Big Pharma, ordered the new Beamer, and bought the holiday home- but we'll give you the belief you've contributed to the "discussion" - suckers!"
