Seasonal Recipes - rant warning!!!

Urgh! Why is it, when you're looking for a bit of inspiration and you find "winter seasonal recipes" they look promising, but as you're reading through the ingredients you find courgettes, peppers, green beans? Not seasonal in this part of my winter.

So this got me thinking, I'd like to do a seasonal recipes section for the website. Please can you post your favorite seasonal recipes here please - doesn't matter which season, there are 4 to cover, but do state for which season it's relevant.

thanks
Julie

I think you have hit upon something very relevant here D. As a green site we should have this section as a sticky and be pushing these issues really.
You can compromise a bit too and bottle your peppers, beans and courgettes for use out of season. A section dealing with preservation would perhaps be useful too - not just jams and chutneys but other ways of preserving everyday food.
I bought 100 kilners this year but if anyone wants to get together in a group I could organise a bulk buy for stuff like that. The more you buy, the cheaper they come. There would have to be a definite committment of course as I don't want to be left with the surplus if anyone drops out as I still have almost 50 left of my own and don't really need any more yet.

Can you bulk buy some storage space too please - that's the problem I have

But yes, I agree, and if we bought in bulk to share it would mean we didn't have to find space for 100 jars
Julie

My secret is to get the kids to move out and use their room for storage....Kilner jars are much less demanding too
And, as Gordon just pointed out, they like being scalded
I can finance this venture up front if need be, but a concensus would need to be agreed amongst the interested parties as to which size we should buy. I bought 900 ml sized jars as I find it the most useful size for us. It is the largest I can fit into my pressure cooker and it saves time. I used most of them for tomatoes but peppers, celery, stuff you use in smaller portions would be better in half litre jars. The surplus keeps very well in the fridge for up to two weeks believe it or not. I put it down to it being sterile when opened and I take care not to contaminate it when taking out the portion I want to use. We are trying to be less dependent on the freezers wherever possible and the jars keep indefinitely, just like tins.

I'm interested - I don't think you should finance it up front though Julie.

If there is a more practical way to do it, that's fine by me, but the offer stands. I could do with a few more small sized jars myself so it wouldn't be catastrophic if I had to take a few as well.
If we decide to go ahead I can post a link to the place I bought mine from. It would enable everyone to see the prices for themselves too and know it was all above board. It might turn out that someone else finds a cheaper site still if we get more folks on board. The jars I bought are thicker and a nicer design than any of the others I have seen in the past and they're stronger than those I already owned too.

We should get back to Dianas original idea though and set up a seasonal recipe thread.
Can someone start with a few creative ideas for using up the three huge marrows I have. Please make them tasty though as I hate the stuff despite all the ways I've tried to cook it

Definitely a good idea to start a new thread with a link to the site.

Seasonal recipes is a fab idea btw - I meant to comment earlier but got sidetracked.

Marrows - I love them sliced and roasted (if you've got the oven on anyway) - it concentrates the flavour and turns what can be a watery and tasteless vegetable into something rather delicious. Even David, a hardened marrow hater, enjoyed marrow when cooked this way. Season (no pun intended) according to taste.
Diana

I like them cut into thick rings then cooked and pile something really tasty but slightly dry in the middle (curry, chilli, flavoured cous cous or spicy rice) so the marrow's liquid can juice it up a bit.
Maria

Wonderful ideas.    Looking forward to a seasonal thread. I'm hoping to have more to store this year so will be interested finding out the cost for jars too. Oh, and marrow, we like them roasted too with a good portion of grated cheese on. Even the little one enjoys them like this.

Brilliant idea Diana

I would definitely be interested in jars but would only use 450g and 250g jars.
Diana

I think 450g would be better for me too.

Of course, now we'll need a preserving/storing thread/article too
