Seasonal drinkNot exactly using local products, though...
I just bought oranges for marmelade in the local shop and remembered an aperitif they made at the French farm where I worked half a lifetime ago, made with Seville oranges; a bit like the dark Martini - bitter-sweet(ish) - only much better, of course! Not quite sure of the quantities and times, but I think it doesn't really matter, anyway. Here is how I make it:
3 Seville oranges - washed and sliced. Stick into large screwtop jar with 3 tablespoons of sugar and a bottle of brandy. Leave for several weeks; mix with 3 bottles of red wine. Add more sugar if you like; strain and enjoy!

Sounds like an exceeding strong version of Sangria - yum

sounds very interesting - could you do the same thing with any oranges or would that be too sweet?

If you *do* have any ordinary oranges laying about then make some Triple Sec. Made some last year and it was very nice.
4 large, sweet oranges
2 1/2 cups vodka
1 3/4 cups sugar
Peel zest from 2 of the oranges and set aside. Squeeze juice from all oranges into a measuring cup and add water, if necessary, to bring juice to 2 cups. Pour juice, sugar and zest into a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 more minutes. Set aside to cool.
Pour cooled juice mixture and vodka into a jar, stir to combine and seal. Let steep 3-4 months. Strain and filter as needed to remove zest and sediment.

I will try this next time we have spare oranges. Sounds good.
