Scottish Gov suggestions for school packed lunches click here
What do you think? Do we really need to feed our kids low fat polyunsaturated spread and low fat yoghurt?

in a word - "no" - butter will do growing kids fine - like all things, in moderation! It's obviously been composed by some dimwit who has only ever shopped in a supermarket.........cartons of juice for goodness sake!
The important thing is to get the balance right - feed them proper food, then let them run it off, or walk it off going to and from school........

The suggestions are full of imported fruit, factory produced breads, "retail" pasta sauce -yuk! I wouldn't feed myself that stuff (and couldn't afford to buy it all in the long run) - poor kids!
Didn't check just now - is there an option to tell them what we think about this cr*p?

No... but there is nothing stopping us from emailing our concerns... but let's discuss it more thoroughly here and come up with some alternative menus.

To me, the most damning indictment of this is that it highlights how a whole section of the community have grown up so ill educated about good diet that the government feel the need to tell them how to eat
I had issues with the content of the home economics lessons when my girls were at school, heaven only knows how bad they are now.

maybe they should spend a bit of money on more physical activity / fun in school, make the streets safer so they can play properly and safely, seems a better idea than low fat yogurt and spread, what are they trying to do put them of food
and who the hell do these people think they are telling us what to feed our kids

My boys are two of only 3 pupils who take a packed lunch to school. They used to have the veggie option school meals but as my boy thought the veggie sausages there disgusting (this is a child who will eat pretty much ANYTHING) he ended up have baked potato and cheese everyday, and since going milk free its no longer an option.
In a packed lunch he will typically have
* Pack of oatcakes
*hummus or p'nut butter
* Pure sunflower spread
* grapes
* homemade flapjack or traybake
*flask of apple juice
Now..am I missing anything???
The new "healthy" school meals are a joke...flavoured yoghurts, burgers and sausages, currys made with I-don't-know-what sauce....the kids where probably putting less junk into themselves when they had chips everyday LOL
But really, Low fat options of anything should only be a requirment if you have a fat child???
and this should be recomended by a doctor..not a leaflet.
