Scottish food names

Sorry, I can't find an appropriate link but just watched, with amusement, an article on BBC Scotland news about a politician who has written to major supermarkets asking them to use Scottish names for foods, i.e. neeps, brambles, etc.  Excuse me?  This was my son's primary teacher on his class project 11 years ago? http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=300326

read an article about in in the newspaper, would have thought folk have better things to do than think up these schemes. If I need those things that you can roast, mash, make chips with etc. I buy them whether they are labelled as potatoes, tatties, spuds or whatever, in fact I rarely look to see what things are called, just know if I need some of "those" or not.

Love the article - and the idea of not losing words that have cultural meaning. Thanks beardies.

Why not let kids share their vocab? It's often part of their heritage...and unlike a heirloom...it's free, whilst making the recipient richer (regardless of nationality or region)!

Thanks Maria, the class had lots of fun when they did this, including being on national news (and thinking they were soooo cool but prob not now!) I just can't see why it is being rehashed in an "adult" form after all this time, do these people not do research?
Whilst I understand what you are saying Myra, I was not comparing you with a class of 8 year olds
Whereas this MP appears to be on a mental par

comparing me to an 8 year old is possibly a good idea, but I promise I will grow up one day! I agree it's a great thing to preserve any tradition, cultural heritage etc. but don't like the idea of giving Tesco an excuse to increase prices to cover the new labelling etc. Every area has their own dialect and their own words for things but for supermarkets to label produce according to where they are situated could cause chaos.

That's it!  Thanks WG! Especially for incorporating the picture of a beardie in the article, how clever are you?!!!!

Well I wish I could take the credit for the beardie but I can't

I think the school teacher had the idea right!
Maria

Ahh now i understand.

Agree - it's a little potty. I'd like someone to discuss (and get as much publicity) on how SNP or any other party are supporting our remaining local shops (not supermarkets) to stock local produce without minimal packaging and food miles, and then let the 'local' decide whether it's a tattie, potato, spud or the like.
Julie

I saw that article too. Have they nothing better to do?
To suggest that people wouldn't know what a neep or a tattie was if called that, implies that we can't look at the veg and recognise it - how insulting of the supermarkets to suggest that!
At the same time, I see no impediment to a dual labelling system if locals want one. I doubt that most of them could care less though, it's just another isolationist policy to me.
I noticed that some time ago I started writing 'tatties' instead of 'spuds' on my shopping list. Does that mean I have fully integrated I do think it's a nicer word actually.
My friend from Lincolnshire calls them 'tates' and I'm sure there are other dialect words from various regions of the UK for stuff, it could get quite silly if everyone started down that road. The sheer variety of names for a bread roll are more confusing imo.

I have always had difficulties with bread rolls when we have moved to a new area.
In Yorkshire they are called Tea Cakes and come in white, brown and fruit
Moved firstly to Georfieland and they are Stotties and the fruit ones are buns (Correct me if I've mis-remembered MN lol)Brown ones didn't seem to exist.
Moved up here and they are buns again (a bun in Yorkshire is a "fairy cake" or similar. For the single portion ones we have cream buns rather than cream cakes.
It is an absolute minefield Nowasays I just point, it's safer.

Tatties were always called tayters (phonetic spelling is difficult isn't it !!) to rhyme with gaiters lol

I thought I was being threatened in Newcastle when offered a stottie!  Mind you, it was a cholesterol threat on Westgate Road!
Julie

Here are the names I know of;
Baps
Cobs
Rolls
Batches
Buns
Bread rolls
Softies
Barms
Finger rolls................bet there's loads more, I can add stotties to my list now too.
Maria

T-cake
Moonbap (huge bap i got in Bath once)
Stonehead

After living in six Australian states (each of which has its own vernacular) and half a dozen countries, and having visited many more countries, I've always found, "Six of them and four those, please", works more than adequately.

So, if the SNP decide to get the supermarkets to label half their stock as "them" and half as "those", then they'll get my vote!
