rusty scales on my chivesMy chives have developed lots of rusty scaly bits on them - is this likely to be rust or some kind of insect. I'll add a photo in due course but thought I'd ask as someone may well know immediately.

in a planter - wooden and with other herbs. Relatively weed free but perhaps they could do with being divided as it's a fairly thick clump.

that was what i was trying to find out, i have some pots here which i havent divided or planted out, i think its the over crowding root binding that does it, you could try repotting them or planting them out, dont forget a handful of my magic compost . of course it could be something else,

looks like youve managed to get a rare one i would think over watering is the problem, were they in a cold frame too, they like it dry and airy, id cut down and burn the tops, and repot the roots in a new pot, and keep them out side

Over watering will be entirely natural then because they are open to the elements - the flowers are looking SO beautiful though :-(
I guess I'll cut them down and split them and keep in a separate pot incase the rust recurs. If it does I'll need to destroy the plants entirely. SOBS loudly.

One thing I've thought of is that the planter also has a good deal of mint in it - wonder if that is why the chives have it. When it's not quite so wet I'll take a closer look at the mints and see if they've got any problems.
