Reduce your water consumption!

A friend sent this to me, and I like this idea so much that I thought I'd post the link - even if it is in German... The picture speaks for itself, though: a combination of hand washing and loo flushing!

what a very clever idea!! I guess you could do something similar with a bowl in the sink and just chuck the water down after you've washed your hands

That's exactly what I used to do in Germany - where of course, water was metered, and not so plentyful as it is here, where we have our own... It just doesn't look as posh. And visitors tended to ask me with a puzzled look on their faces - what is that bowl in the sink for? :?

It hadn't occurred to me to do this before, but will find a bowl that will fit in the sink and do just that from now on. Thanks Ina

Neat idea, though not sure if handwashing water would be sufficient to flush. Who was it who said "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down"?

I'm currently thinking about how, in an all-female household, we can add urine to the compost heap, which I've read is a Very Good Thing. Or is it just an excuse for the males to have a practice at aiming outdoors?

nb edited to put back reference to compost heap - I either deleted it by mistake before posting or some net nanny doesn't like the word "urine".

I'm not sure if this model does it - but the water from the bowl should be stored in the cistern, and then used for flushing - or topped up with mains water if it isn't enough. And of course, one of these days every cistern will have a "water save" option...
