Rabbit 1 - Stoat (& Buzzard) 0

Saw a smallish rabbit running about on one of our fields today. The grass is covered in snow, so there's not a lot visible to eat.

Suddenly Rabbit leapt into the air, sending flurries of snow upwards. Then another animal came into view - a stoat, in the glorious ermine of winter, with the tiny black flash on the tail. Rabbit had been caught by the stoat & was trying to escape. Rabbit leaps again, more snow blizzards above the ground, and result...the stoat lets go &  bounds away across the field.

Rabbit must be happy now - but he's obviously breathless & a little stunned. He lies on the snow recovering. Until the buzzard descends from the heavens and picks Rabbit up by the scruff of his neck.

This wakes Rabbit up, and he struggles madly. Buzzard finds his take-off is being hampered by a very much alive Rabbit and drops Rabbit back onto the snow. Buzzard flies away, no doubt disgusted that his lunch wasn't quite as dead as he had hoped.

So, there's Rabbit, back on the ground - very breathless & with a pounding heart. He stays still for a few moments, shakes his ears, and runs off down the field and into the veg garden.

One very lucky Rabbit.

Why don't I ever have a camera when something like this happens.

Buzzard must have seen the stoat lose his breakfast and thought he was in for an easy snack himself.
