Puzzle for youMy son last year put up a bat box in one of our trees....Matty and I have just been in the paddock, and under and around where the box is, is droppings....plain, bright, orange ones in the snow! Matt climbed the tree and looked in the box to see it had been used....but he didnt know by what. said there were more droppings in the box...but they looked a little bird like, yet the entrance to the box is very small.
Any Ideas?

no, but how wide is the gap

Not a bat - most likely to be a bird eating berries - the gap should be too small for any birds but it shounds like they've found a wee space to shelter

Thats what we think DDD, but although we can get a half hand in(only when flat), it would have to be a small bird...and with Orange droppings???
we have seen a hollybush thrush, Robin, starlings, yellow hammers and rooks in the garden...but all of these are too big.

the very small birds like wrens and gold crests will all gather together for warmth over night.
You can get roosting pouches which are like woven grass nest boxes but purely for the birds to hide from the cold in.
I've noticed that our wrens go in to the poo pile. Its obviously warm 'cos of the composting action and there are lots of spaces in between the straw to roost.

theres lots of straw in the bat box , when my son did it....so i guess that will be why it likes it there then
