Get as many helpers as possible (2 will probably do), each with long canes held out at arm's length, get "behind" the chooks, and slowly advance, tapping the canes on the ground - we used to persuade a couple of thousand of them into the houses using this method.........

we used to have one of those auto closers, and it did work tbh, but they are ££££. we sold it with the chicken house and run with the house tho....

our chooks go to bed really early 7pm, except for one that wants to stay out late. I usually chase her in myself. If the weather is bad, they'll be in by 6pm.
I think you just have to get them in to a routine, we used treats to bring them in at first and they got used to this and now they go in without any problems...except for that one...
We also have an automatic door raiser and lowerer and its invaluable. It lets them out in to the run at 6.15am so I can have a lie in at weekends and it closes the door at 8.30pm. I think its brilliant.

the automatic door opener sounds good. i think i will look into that. going to go and see if they are in their house just now as i think it is late enough for them to be out. going to try the treat method of getting them to bed early too.
thanks for the advice

The longer their day is, the better they will lay.
We go out late and do a quick head count, before closing the run. They have access to the run at all times, then they get out of the run to range when we get up.
