Poorly Hen

Daisy, my light sussex hen is not looking too well...

Her Symptoms :  Runny/watery Poo's, one half is white and the other half is clear... she does have a tiny wee amount of watery looking blood at her vent but don't see any visible damage, have felt around her vent area and underneath and it feels soft enought, thought she may have been compacted, cause she does lay bigish eggs, although infrequent..

She is all hunched up and inside the coop, no runny nose, sneezing, laboured breathing etc... but her eyes look like she's unwell (tired looking eyes), her wings are not hanging down and her tail is not droopy.

I have put citricidal in the water, because she is drinking, not seen her eating much either.

I have cleaned just finished cleaning out the whole eglu and dusted every nook and cranny with diatomaceous earth including daisy and her side kick chicken little...

Any other suggestions most appreciated.

How old is she.

Hi M & L  she is 3

She doesn't sound old to be suffering any eggy type problems, but if she has a bleeding bottom and lays big eggs, she may have a slight prolapse. The vet told us to wash our chicken's bum with salty water, she got metacam and antibiotics. The other thing to watch out for, if she is bleeding that her partner doesn't peck her and she doesn't get flystrike.
Hope she recovers.

are her feathers ruffled?
Townie

Thanks M & L

I have been keeping a very close eye on her...

She does not appear to have a prolapse (nothing hanging out),  her vent looks pretty tight, but then again so your yours if someone was blowing on it to part the fluffy feathers ...

There has been no further bleeding, and what was there was hardly any..

Joh.. she's not ruffling her feathers as such, she is just looking a bit humphed up with her neck in close to her body.. and her eyes are tired and heavy looking

She has been drinking an awful lot of water ... which made me think, she might have a temperature, as I read somewhere that chickens drink a lot of water to cool themselves down, which can generate watery poos.

If she is no better tonight I'll take her along to the vet, but they dont seem to specialise in poulty.

I just thought....

When I came home from work the other night it was blowing a hoolie and chucking it down with rain, the rain cover had blown off the eglu and the 2 girls were soaked through, how they never went indooors to the coop i'll never know..

Just wondering if she may have caught a chill ?

Is there any lameness. If she is drinking a lot it could be a kidney problem, lameness can also indicate this. Depending on how much you want to investigate, and assuming she doesn't have a temp when the vet checks ( may be drinking because of that), it might be worth a blood test.

Just been speaking to my OH who is home from work already to get a progress report on Daisy..

She is looking a lot better, out of the coop, walking around with her head up and neck stretched, eating and pecking around.. so fingers crossed she is over whatever was wrogn with her... will check her out myself once I get home and let you know how she is

Fingers crossed
