Poo Free (mooching and musing)I was pottering through some green blogs.... can I put them here(?) I hope so, they seem fine(???) Firstly //simple-green-frugal-co-op.blogspot.com I've just started to follow this and then it lead me to //1greengeneration.elementsintime.com/?p=365
Or more specifically this page. It talks about going shampoo free. The other blog says you can go cold turkey (dipped head in oil) or space out shampoos and reduce chemicals or you ca go baking soda and vinegar route. This page gives you the info needed.
After my Moon Cup..... jump (Still fab), I thought how about this, I hate buying shampoo and since..... deep breath, I'm a slave to 6 weeks semi permanent colours. I'm sorry chemicals yes, I can do being size 16 sometimes 18 not small, I can do no make up for days on end. I can't do roots yet, (well not over four weeks late anyway) just to vain.
So, am planning to give it a go, hubby may too (when he finds out), maybe the girls too.
Who else out there is shampoo free and what happened? The blog above said she could see her health via her hair, greasier when poorly. Thought interesting point, another window to health. My teeth give me a 3 day cold warning after all......

I've seen stuff about this before and quite honestly I couldn't do it. I also use hair colourant - get one from the Neeps Co-op that is supposedly 'greener' but it still contains chemicals. It does a pretty good job though - Herbatint .
I'd definitely be interested to hear how you go - from what I remember about our brief encounter at the last Neeps meet I recall a healthy shining head of hair!

What about henna, fmn? It's natural and works on all hair without damage to hair or environment.
The lovely lodger and I had a fab evening with it after getting some at the last food co-op. It comes in various shades of brown and many shades of red, and the ones from suma are excellent and very good value...

I tried, but eventually gave up. I do have long hair though and it's supposed to be a faster transition the shorter you hair.

many many many many years ago, many years ago, many many years ago, I had really long hair and I went 18 months with out using shampoo. After about 6 weeks it didn't really need it. It didn't seem any better or worse than when I used to use shampoo.
Some of my goth and grebo friends at the time who had dreds used to use scented oils to keep their hair smelling nice.
These days, if my hair feels greasy, I just shave it off.

Poo Free (mooching and musing)I think I need to try some of these alternatives. I did try Henna with my friend when we were 15 ad ended up with dark green hair for a looooonnnnnngggg fortnight. (It could have been the plan but it wasn't.)
Never heard of Herba tint. Always good to hear something works first. I've not kept track of co-op day this month and besides am stocked up and roots-a-fresh but next month need to look into this. Also need to look for Orgnic white vinegar. Have some bog standard stuff now but it stinks!!!! Maybe half term is a good trial start. Away from people's noses and can still wear a hat!
I envy you Pete, right now mine's pretty short in readiness to grow longish again, so I think this might be good timing. If my youngest had draed locks, my life would be so much easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will keep posted when I begin.

Try playing a lot of reggae and always point out how cool folk with dreads look. Not that I see many dreads round here, sadly...

I only recently got my first grey hairs (49) and I was waiting to see how I felt about them before taking the drastic dyeing step. Trouble is, once you start you can't stop without it seeming dramatic. I'm glad I gave them a chance as they have turned out to be silver and I'm learning to love them. I was a blonde teenager and it seems I'm going back to my roots (PTP).
If you feel brave enough, give them a chance - you might even like them, who knows.
I do also fancy Pete's method, it sounds great for the summer and easy care too. If I did that, what's the betting that everyone would assume I had cancer though

I have a head of thick, long hair (great for head banging!)...so i think folk might also wonder what's happened to me if i shaved it all off.
I really admire FMN and ZC for their commitment to this as i absolutely couldn't do it. I can only struggle through 1 day without washing it at present.
I've never tried the co-op's hair dye. maybe i will though. As of this afternoon, I'm blonde and purple again.

I couldn't give up washing my hair either - does it make you feel itchy?

I shaved my head after one last new year in a manchester rock club many years ago and then went back home to Newcastle. I arranged to meet a mate in the pub and he walked past me! He didn't recognise me with no hair.

I had my head shaved for a good cause in public last May. I was astounded how good it looked and felt. It was liberating, and very surprisingly the easiest way to go "10 years younger". I can't see me going back to all that conditioning, combing and farting about again. I've had it cut twice since. And the henna has taken fab on the grey.
But I would highly recommend this as a summer idea. Chilly necks and freezing ears are not to be recommended - luckily we have an eclectic hat selection

Poo Free (mooching and musing)Lying in bed last night, I suddenly realized in all this hair dye talk that i use semi permanents are any of these semi permanent? As for the grey, my family go grey early, I started getting odd ones at 17, hence the start of the hair dye. I don't mind them coming through as most are under my fringe anyway and a few at parting seem to suit my face more than the freshly dyed look that looked better in early 20's, so hair keeping up with face now LOL.
My
fear at saying good bye to the hair dye isn't that I'll go grey but the balance will tip more and ........I'll start to look like my mother who never dyed...... I just can't. I don't have a problem with aging, only aging faster than my age....
Re the washing, it doesn't drive me up the wall like LOR but I currently wake up looking like a fibre optic lamp and wettening down works enough for a quick trip to the shop for milk but then it springs up again!?!?

I also started getting grey hairs as a teenager - and have dyed my hair regularly since then. I did bite the bullet and allow the natural look and was fine with it until I was referred to as the granny of my youngest child!! I did have my eldest daughter with me at the time so I suppose it was a fair assumption (she was around 18 at the time) but it didn't make me feel very good :-(
Henna - don't you need to grow out all your old chemically coloured hair before using this? Do we all have to do a Fia to be able to use it? How long does it take - I've heard tales of sitting with the stuff on your heid for about 4 hours, and other tales telling of how messy it all is.

Hair DyeThey say you're supposed to go lighter with age but I think the only way to do that if your dark like me, is serious hairdresser time and money. If I let the roots grow out and use a lighter one, it's not that bad but I go fake orangey in the sunlight. aaaarrrgggh I wouldn't mind but I'm not hair obsessed, I want as little fuss and time as possible.
At some point, I'm going to have to take the jump or I'll look like Morticia Adams

I've grey hairs thru' mine... rather more these days actually
Also have a fair head of hair... was told the day at the hairdressers that theres not much chance of me going bald
I do keep wondering now and again of whether to dye it... although I was thinking more colour than hiding the greys IYKWIM

I've been going grey since I was 23 (ARGHH). I tried the henna stuff. worked lovely apart from my grey bits went bright orange rather than the same colour as the rest of my hair..oops.
I tried the Bicarb and vinegar last night. Worked lovely. Clean hair and very little itch. I have an itchy scalp generally and sometimes the itch can start as soon as my hair is dry from the wash.
So we'll see how it goes.

I have about 20% grey at the front (where I can see it, damn!) but when I hennaed it (with bright red) the grey went a dark red and actually looks like I've spent a fortune in the hairdressers for highlights. Perhaps it depends on how long you leave it - that was just less than an hour...
Glad the bicarb and vinegar worked so far...

Glad it's working for you ZC.
I'm so tempted. Also started going grey early 20's. I've just about given up with trying to colour it. Hate the cost, being sat in a hairdressers for 2 hours, and feeling rotten about all the chems down the drain. It doesn't last so it's an endless useless cycle! I end up with my hair tyed up just about all year.
Been thinking about henna too. Does anyone know if you can use it over a permanent colour - and with the no wash bicarb & vinegar? Or will I have a green head of hair?

Bicarb and VinegarBicarb wash sounds great!!!! Did you use plain white vinegar or organic or????
Does the vinegar smell for long or did you add something nice to it?

That because you are washing the natural oils out of your hair. be tough with yourself leave it for two days before washing...you will find that your hair wont itch after a while.

Every Summer I envy those blokes who can just shave their hair off to keep cool. Why are women judged so badly if they do?
Remember Britney all over the news for taking the shears off her reluctant hairdresser and everyone saying she was having a breakdown? Either that or folks would think you were having chemo and look at you with pity. I thought Persis Cambataand Sinead O'Connor looked amazing with no hair, it really accentuated their beautiful faces.

Only ever cut my hair really short a couple of times... I guess if you can keep it that short yourself then it wouldn't be so bad but I CBA going back and fore to the barber/hairdresser, hence I tend to cut it short, then grow it long, repeat as required
Currently got it mid-length (for me)... doesn't seem to grow just as quick these days as it used to.

Did realise why i shouldn't wash it everyday, but just have to wash it everyday or at least rinse it.
The most I've gone without washing it is 3 days and was driving myself and everyone around me mad.
And of course, as I'm in childcare, my hair has regularly got splatters of soup, gloop and goodness knows what else in it!!!!

Only been used on my head a few times... went from longer than shoulder length to a grade 1 or 2 IIRC... surprised a few people
Not up for that any more though... prefer it longer I think.

I use shampoo that doesn't have sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate in it - it doesn't strip the natural oils in the scalp. Generally to find these shampoos, you have to look in the healthfood shops or online as the supermarkets won't sell them (at least not on Lewis they don't!).
If only we could eat something to colour the hair safely from inside out, like cows eating red beets turns the milk pink... :S

Poo freeHi,
No to be honest I haven't. Things have been very heavy with my youngest, so assessments re getting respite going on and less sleep. I seem to be falling asleep most nights at 8.30 and running around like a headless chook at weekends.
Bizarrely, when list of things-to-do seems longer than used to be, you'd think 'not washing hair,' would make life easier...... but fretting about hair not washed seems too much and having a social worker note my hair as unwashed, 'bless, she really does need a break!'
Will definitly do it at some point though. I need enough hair to stick up when it bugs me though, right now, I'd look like a greasy hedgehog!!!
