Perseid Meteor shower

Hey,

Next tuesday (11th) Wednesday (12th) is the peak of the perseid meteor shower.  If we have clear skys we might get 2-3 a minute.

POSSIBLE PERSEID OUTBURST: This year's Perseid meteor shower could be even better than usual. "A filament of comet dust has drifted across Earth's path and when Earth passes through it, sometime between 0800 and 0900 UT (1 - 2 am PDT) on August 12th, the Perseid meteor rate could surge to twice its normal value," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. The following profile is based on the debris stream models of veteran forecasters Jeremie Vaubaillon and Mikhail Maslov:

Any idea what time in the evening?  Especially if it only lasts 2-3mins.

Cheers Pete

I think Pete meant that there would be 2 or 3 per minute and the best time should be just after midnight

yeah, around 200 an hour at its peak.  Unfortunately the say the peak will happen around 8am for us,  so we'll miss it.

You will see them all night, the perseus constallation is to the north east.  In fact, people are starting to see them now.

check out www.spaceweather.com for more information

If its clear, its worth lying out under the stars for half an hour between 11.30pm and 2.30am.

good luck

Trying to watch meteorites whilst using a trampoline?  Sounds like a recipe for disaster!

We had a look in Boyndlie - disappointingly cloudy before midnight - and couldn't see anything - didn't try lying outside after midnight - opted instead for the sofabed and sleep.
