PectinI am just in the process of ordering pectin from Silverspoon - the sachets of powdered stuff. It's very difficult to get it in shops (ASDA stock it, Morrisons and Coop are supposed to stock it, but I haven't seen in in any of their shops for a long time, either...). Silverspoon have offered to supply direct, but only some out-of-date stock, at a reduced price. The minimum order is 5 cases (each case 6 packets at 3 sachets). Needless to say, I will order the minimum, and keep them all if nobody wants any. However: if anybody wants a large number of packets, I might order more than the minimum. So, this is your chance: as I want to send the order off tomorrow (desperate for the stuff), you'd have to let me know tonight if you'd like me to order more!
Otherwise, of course you can order direct, but then it will have to be the minimum of 5 cases again (and you'd need to request the form for the disclaimer from them).

Any idea of what a sachet will do - erm, I mean, so people have an idea for how much they might use/need

Sorry, found the answer myself:
"One 13g sachet of Pectin is the correct amount to use with 1kg of Granulated Sugar"

Townie - using pectin saves on cooking time (and energy/money), and preserves the natural flavour better. Some fruit has enough pectin of it's own, but others don't. It also saves lemon juice - and that doesn't come cheap, either!

Ina don't buy any especially for me, but if you have any left I would be interested.
I have just checked Asda online but they don't have. I would have had added to my order and dropped it into on the way to the Montrose games on Sunday

No bother - I've just stuck the cheque in the post, so hopefully they won't take too long to deliver.
Silverspoon said that even Tesco's don't stock it this year... As it's seasonal, they delist it at the end of every season - and they'll only put it back on the list if they think it's worth their while, i.e. if they think they'll make a decent profit on it! So a small product like that - well, stands to reason they won't make a lot of profit - why should they stock it then? So much for customer service!

If ever you know it's in stock in Asda let me know as I order once a month and I'll just add it on for you, or anything else you should ever need...delivery is free any way for me

I bought sugar with added pectin in it (Jam sugar) and it was fine. I mixed it with granulated for a less solid set. You can make your own pectin from cooking apples and freeze it down so it is ready for next season too. Havent got the recipe on me at the mo though....

The Jam sugar isn't organic or raw sugar, though - and it's easier to adjust the quantities used with the powder. And going down the make your own pectin route is only viable if you have loads of apples free... Wish I had any apples at all!
