Pay recycling costs, stores told
UK supermarkets produce too much packaging, almost 40% of which is non-recyclable, local councils say.
The Local Government Association argues supermarkets should pay towards the collection of their packaging as an incentive to cut back.
In a survey of 29 common grocery items, it found Waitrose had the most wrapping while Tesco had the least.
But Waitrose said it had cut the weight of its packaging by a third since 2001 and believed the report was misleading.
Lidl had the least recyclable packaging on their products, Sainsbury's contained the most. |

quite right, it does seem a bit pointless making me balance my food on my head, or plead for a plastic bag, when all the stuff is contained in plastic and card, of corse we could all take our wrappers back to the supermarket along with our own bag.

Sounds like a pretty flawed study to me - the only thing it proves is that you can prove anything with statistics! For example - Lidl has the least percentage of recyclable packaging. But: I find that their products tend to have very little packaging in the first place - next to no unnecessary wrapping - plus they are the only ones who charge for their plastic bags and hence have been using a lot less than everybody else! That is, of course, changing a bit these days. And to use only 29 products is a bit restrictive, too: who chose which products to include?
