OpenOffice

Does anybody have experience with this? I thought that my computer (ex work) had Word, but it didn't, so I've been using OpenOffice - and now I've sent something off and the other end is having problems opening it.... I thought they were compatible - they are so very similar. Argh! Nightmare!
IainC

Yup they are. Just ensure when you save your work, that you save it in a compatible format (ie .doc or .RTF), then the other side will be able to open it no problem.

I think it uses .odt as default.

Grrr - I'm a bit behind times. I just saved it as .txt - that's what is was a few decades ago, wasn't it! Right, try again.

Cheers, Iain. Great to have computer specialists on tap.

As a .txt then ANY PC should have been able to open it, as thats what notepad and wordpad use in windows, and I'm fairly sure any *nix machine would cope with it too.

Ah well - I've asked the lady at the other end to let me know how it goes - she now has three versions of it - but I think she's gone for lunch! It's an application, and the deadline is today - of course, I left it to the last minute, as usual... That'll teach me a lesson. And maybe I should get myself a printer, and fax, too...
Ina

It's worked - and I'm off for a walk on the beach now! Thanks for your input, Iain - I spent so much time on that application, it would have been a real bugger if it had not got through after all...

No problems... lucky I spotted it before I went for a wander in the sunshine myself... it's lovely out there... was a real drag coming back into the office.

I use openoffice and the only issue Ive ever had has been when a spreadsheet had filters on it, I could only see that version, I couldnt amend the filters or take them off.

but its great on the whole, I wouldnt change, and its free and not MS!
Ina

Yes, it seems to do everything that word does (or excel, I suppose) - and what more do I want!
