Onions

Didn't know where to put this - but have you noticed that the only onions Tesco and Morrisons (in Inverurie at least) are from New Zealand!  I won't buy stuff brought that far, especially basic veg., so I ended up buying British shallots and red onions instead.  Before last year I never dreamt we imported onions from NZ.  The onion crop must be ready in England, but perhaps too expensive for the supermarkets to make their huge profits.  When I was in Portsoy at the boat festival this weekend I saw a great crop of onions in someone's veg garden - so there MUST be some ready to harvest down south.  Think of the huge tonnage of onions the supermarkets must sell and the cost in money and carbon to get them here.
