Nora Batty lays egg.........let joy be unconfined! Nora Batty has today presented us with her first egg...........
Nora (so-called because of her feathered legs/feet, which bear a more than passing resemblance to her namesake's droopy stockings), rather than heading out this morning, stayed in the nest box - an hour or so later, she popped out, leaving behind our first egg from this flock (of 7)
This undoubtedly proves "the law of sod" - they are now circa 20 weeks old, and as we aren't giving them supplementary lighting, it was a toss up if they'd come into lay now, or leave it until spring....... last night I was given a tray of pullets' eggs, this morning....... (but I'm not complaining)

And here's her home, featured in this week's unofficial (and still unfinished) internet "Grand Designs"
http://my.opera.com/brosville/blog/
featuring a stack of ply offcuts, some "end of line" fabric "seconds", and boot-sale paint...... the ply was a freebie, and came with an "it's marine ply" comment - a short while before the "under construction" photo was taken, I left a couple of small offcuts out overnight, during which it rained........
The waterproofing was the same method I've used on boats - slap a good thick coat of paint on, then apply canvas-like material tightly (lots of drawing pins, swearing and fruit-oil soaked rags to clean paint off hands - then slap on another thick coat of paint..........
There's now 2 of them laying!
