Newton Dee Bakery

Must post this here - the best bread I've found so far in Scotland is made by the Newton Dee bakery, and sold in their shop. They do various types from sourdough rye to chiabatta, sunflower, white, wholemeal... Not everything every day, though. Newton Dee belongs to the Camphill Communities http://www.camphill.org.uk/guide/newtond/newtond.htm

The shop also sells a wide range of organic (and other) produce, lots of it bought in bulk and weighed out on the premises, so it's very reasonably priced. They sell some local veg (some from their own farms), but also bought in British and imported stuff. Very good is their way of labelling: You can see with one glance at the price ticket on the shelf whether a product is organic, conventional or gluten free. On some items they give you a 10% discount if you buy a full pack (coffee, for example).

Their cafe is worth a visit - delicious homebakes, very good coffee, and just about every kind of tea you can imagine. It's run mostly by volunteers, so service can be patchy, although always very friendly. They also sell a nice range of toys and gifts - some made in their own workshops; lots of "natural" stuff in wood.

The opening times are not the ones one is used to from normal shops nowadays, so it's best to phone before you go for the first time! Sundays are definitely closed, so are Monday mornings, and religious holidays (I got caught out on Ascension day...)
