We're about a week/10 days away from our own expectant hatching.
What do I feed the little ones when they appear?
I've got some chick crumb, but do I need anything special?

They will be fine with just chick crumb to begin with. It has all the nutrients they need.
I sprinkle it on the floor to begin with until they get the hang of eating it.
The other point to mention - and I'm sorry for repeating it if you already know, but others reading might not know. When they hatch and you move them to a breeder, be it posh wooden house or converted cardboard box. Don't line the floor with newspaper. It is far too slippery and you can end up with chicks with 'splayed legs'. I use newspaper as a base, but for the first few days until they have really found their feet, I cover it with a sheet of that fine rubbery plastic mesh that is sold to stop things sliding off trays and car dashboards. Sorry I don't know its name. It's washable and can be used over and over again and they only need it for the first few days and then they are fine on newspaper. I know people who use a piece of old sheet, or a towel equally successfully. Just something that their little feet can grip while they are getting the hang of standing up and walking around.
